A fire in the kitchen at a pub in Rookley resulted in a call-out for numerous Island fire crews this morning (Tuesday). Crews from Newport, Ryde, Ventnor and Shanklin respectively were called to The Chequers Inn on Niton Road at around 09:10. It is understood around 5 pumping appliances, as well as the Aerial Ladder Platform and temporary Command Support Unit – both from Newport – were mobilised to the scene. The fire was out on arrival, with firefighters using ventilation fans to rid the premises of smoke. A fire safety visit was conducted before firefighters left the scene at 09:30.

Why so many appliances ?, is the cloth on the snooker table being
replaced back at the station
Lol
Following the tragic fire at the weekend community fire officers carried out checks on properties in the area. They advised that 4 appliances would attend our property in the event of a fire so that many to the chequers would probably be appropriate as there is the possibility that persons could be trapped in the building.
As usual far more engines arrive than are ever needed.
What the fire reports going forward.
It’s the unions ploy for more full time staff then with the end of year reporting how many engines were called out. This case in point 7 fire appliances and the fire was out before they arrived.
If the unions win this game…I know a deputy station commander so hear what goes on….your council tax bills will rise accordingly.
Just saying.
Use them or loose them, they are there for your safety as well as everyone else’s.
Agreed, why don’t people reporting give information and first on scene when assessed cancel the others,7 units at speed along country roads one day will be serious accident, Newport should of been first and could of cancelled Ryde and Shanklin at least.
I think you’ll find that’s just the standard response to a fire classed as ‘retail and public assembly’. I don’t think the attendance is adjusted according to what the unions want do that month do you?…or your friend in the know!?
more than happy to pay more tax to fund more police and fire fighters, they are the ones who run towards trouble not away from it, it’s the useless councillors i object to.
