Ofqual statistics have revealed GCSE results on the Isle of Wight are some of the worst in the country.
In 2024, 59.5% of the 10,830 students who sat their GCSEs received a 4 (C) or above. However, this year, the Island saw a 1.6% drop in results to 57.9% achieving a 4 or above out of 10,855 students.
Comparison data from all subjects shows the Isle of Wight sitting below Staffordshire (60%) and Merseyside (60.4%), which have much larger populations at 107,075 and 134,790. The 2 counties have also seen rates drop this year with Staffordshire falling from 61.5% and Merseyside falling from 61%.
Only 12.9% the Island’s 10,855 students achieved top marks of a grade 7 (A/A*) or above.

It’s not all bleak though. Ofqual statistics show that the Island did not have the worst performance in Maths, History and Combined Sciences.
51.1% of Island students passed maths compared to the Northern Counties of Staffordshire and Merseyside which had a 50% pass rate.
Islanders excelled in History, out-performing the counties of Cumbria (61.5%), East Riding of Yorkshire (57.1%), Suffolk (57.6%) and Shropshire (58.1%) with an impressive 62.7% of students achieving the pass mark.
Combined Science has also proved to be a popular subject across the Island with 54.6% of students again out performing Shropshire (49.6%) and Staffordshire (52.1%).
As previously reported by Island Echo, this year’s A-level results also left much to be desired after data revealed that just 18% of entries received A or A*, the lowest of any county.

It would be interesting to see how our dear leader councilor Jordan responds to this see as he’s responsible for the schools.
There clearly isn’t 10,000 students sitting their GCSEs on the island. 6 secondary schools- is the island echo suggesting over 1000 year 11 students per school? Useless.
Actually yes.. Sandown High has about 2000 atleast.. plus that’s year 10 and 11..
The Academies who run IW schools are obviously getting it wrong perhaps they would care to comment on this data.
You don’t need qualifications to drive a white van and pretend to be a builder although the island is a bit saturated on that front.
Very true, the island is full of dopey locals masquerading
around in white vans.
Lol
Numptyville Isle, from what I see the whole island
are sucking on their vapes, no wonder the children
don’t stand a chance if the parents are stupid.
Poverty. That’s what all three areas have in common. The higher the pass rates, the higher the level of affluence. Rutland, Surrey and London are the top 3 with the highest pass rates. The education is the same, but the determinants are vastly different.
Other cultures children study much harder
that’s why they are achievers.
Yes, there may be a correlation between affluence, and educational achievement….
but is is cause or effect ??
is there a lack of educational achievement, because of a lower level of affluence, or is there a a lower level of affluence because of a lack of educational achievement ??
is the education system to blame,.. or is it the fault of the parents??
are the individual teachers at fault,.. or is it an excessivly prescribed curriculum ??
is the education system too focussed on academic achievement, or should there be greater emphasis on vocational qualifications ??
Unfortunately, the one thing that is pretty much a certainty,.. is that if (when) Deform get into power,..it’s not going to get any better…
(the ‘Elite’, who Farage likes to suck up to, and likes to consider himself one of,.. prefer the masses to be uneducated,.. it makes them easier to control,.. as can be seen from Deform’s current populatity)
Katharine Birbalsingh has comprehensively disproved this point. Her school in Wembley(?) caters for the poorest, most deprived children and produces results which compare favourably with the most exclusive, high performing private schools in the country. If her name is unfamiliar to you, then I suggest you look it up. Unsurprisingly, she does not see eye to eye with the idiotic Education Secretary. Funny, that.
Thank heavens for the mainlanders who move to the Island and raise the average IQ…
Island schools and teachers have been shit since I was in high school and they’ve just been getting shitter.. Actually get well qualified teachers who care about the kids and their subjects they teach and stop planting substitutes in place when teachers can’t be bothered.. then maybe kids will actually learn something.. A child’s grade falls solely on the teachers. If teachers aren’t engaged, neither are the students.
Anyone know if these figures include the Private schools ..??
