The weekend of 9th-10th August marked a milestone for rowing and sailing on the Isle of Wight as Brading Haven Gig Rowers hosted their first-ever Summer Gig Regatta – the Island’s inaugural event to welcome both rowing and sailing gigs.
Brading Haven Gig Rowers, part of Brading Haven Yacht Club and founded just over 2 years ago, brought together clubs and communities in a celebration of traditional water sports. The weekend featured racing, rowing, sailing and social events, all centred around the shared passion for gigs.
A key moment came in December when the club acquired Seahorse from Swanage Sea Rowing Club – a gig equipped with sails. With the rowing team being based at a yacht club, members embraced the opportunity to honour both rowing and sailing traditions.
On Sunday, history was made as sailing gigs were seen on the waters of the Isle of Wight for the very first time. Crews from Brading Haven, Yarmouth Gig Rowers and Langstone Pilot Gig Club rigged Seahorse and Spirit, hoisting sails in the Bembridge breeze. The two traditional boats glided side by side, marking an unforgettable first for local gig enthusiasts.
Sandie Gallard-Jupp, Captain of Rowing at Brading Haven Yacht Club, has said:
“This has been a truly special weekend for all of us. Both Langstone Pilot Gig Club and Yarmouth Gig Club have given us incredible support over the past few years, and it meant so much to have them join us.
“For many rowers, this was the first time they had ever seen a gig under sail – it’s a memory we’ll treasure.”
The event also raised funds for Mountbatten Isle of Wight Hospice through entry donations, supporting the charity’s work across the local community.
Following the success of this first regatta, plans are already underway for a return in 2026.
