Kind-hearted people on the Isle of Wight are being urged to support the UK’s biggest food donation event this summer, with charities launching a huge recruitment drive for volunteers.
This year, the Trussell Trust and FareShare are marking 10 years of working in partnership with Tesco to collect food donations in its supermarkets. With both charities reporting increasing need for food, those donations have never been more important.
The 2 charities have now put a call out for volunteers to help out at collection points in stores during the Tesco Food Collection, which takes place at the Isle of Wight’s bigger Tesco stores from 30th June to 2nd July.
During the collection, customers will be asked to donate long-life food to help food banks in the Trussell Trust’s network provide food parcels to people facing financial hardship, as well as to help FareShare in supporting frontline charities and community groups.
Volunteers are needed because they play a vital role in speaking to customers, encouraging them to donate, and helping them to choose items that are most-needed by Isle of Wight food banks and charities. Tesco will top up all the food donated during the collection with an additional 20% cash donation to the charities to support them in their work.
Every can or packet donated will make a difference, with the Trussell Trust’s network of food bank centres reporting a 14% rise in food parcels handed out last year, while more than 75% of the charity and community groups supplied by FareShare are also reporting an increase in demand.
Emma Revie, Trussell Trust CEO, said:
“As the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite, millions of people are struggling to survive. We know that too many families will be forced to use a food bank over the coming months because they are unable to afford the essentials.
“Supporting the Tesco Food Collection this summer by volunteering could make all the difference to your Isle of Wight food bank during this busy period. You could donate a couple of hours of time and volunteer during the collection, or you could donate food to your local Tesco donation point. Please do get in touch to hear about volunteering opportunities.”
Lindsay Boswell, Chief Executive at FareShare, added:
“The cost-of-living crisis is having a huge impact on thousands of families and our charities are telling us that demand for their services continues to grow as a result. That’s why the Tesco Summer Food Collection is so important. We would be hugely grateful to anyone who is able to volunteer at the Tesco Food Collection this summer to encourage more shoppers to donate much-needed food to FareShare, so we can continue to support those who need it most.”
People can find more about the collection and sign up to volunteer by visiting Tesco Food Collection – The Trussell Trust.
the top four senior management at fareshare take home £360,000 in salaries between them, with one of them taking between £90k and £100k – clearly they are taking more than their fair share already
the trussel trust top three senior managers take home between £80k and £110k – with one of them taking over £100k in wages.
fare share has £21m in cash and trussel has £48m as stated in their last accounts.
I won’t be donating, just to see that money lining the pockets of the senior management.
You didn’t mention Tesco, lol
Disgusting and even if this were not the case I would not donate.
Those in receipt get extra universal credit and are getting a thousand pounds to pay for heating. They get subsidised rent and council tax. They get free perscriptions free dental care and paid for each new life they carelessly bring into their impoverished world.
So as their expenditure is less than others They can well afford food unless buying drugs and alcohol.
Give nothing.
fareshare were “given” £26.6 million by defra last year to buy food for people, as a grant – wonder how much was trousered by the staff

It makes me sick these stupid people giving to such cretins.
When Tesco and the like get involved, WE are all paying for them to do so via higher food prices.
The money doesn’t and won’t ever come from the CEO’s pocket, but ours, THEN they have the nerve to expect us to buy something extra from their shop, making them richer to then donate to spongers and low lives, YET TESCO get the credit as if it is they who are doing a good deed.
The social security system is overly generous, hence why half the world is on our shore line.
DON’T expect us to pay our taxes to keep rubbish and feed them as well.
For “kind hearted people” read, gullible, naieve foolish people.
Don’t people understand that as ALL people get the same benefits, then either ALL should be near starving, or none.
These useless waste of air beings will never, ever learn IF suckers keep giving them ever more.
WE pay for them via taxes now to just bring in more children into their world.
Contraception is free, so NO excuse IF your life is so very bad to bring more into such.
These beings have milked the system, and NOW are trying to milk us with hard luck tripe
Rather give to animals, as they haven’t the sense to know better, this rabble has.
Absolutely true. No chance of donations from me either, only gives them more energy to copulate.
Fair to assume that few on here will volunteer then!
Mind, I don’t blame them. I work with a guy who has two children, his other half claims single parent allowance, so gets all rent, poll tax and does 20 hrs work, and gets more than I earn with top up money and claims two family allowances.
He lives with her, but has a mate whose address he uses and they claim free food, and like matey says going to get a grand energy funding. They live a good life and she has half the week off to enjoy life.
There may be an odd hardship case, but most are scamming the system to the max
No doubt their hearts are in the right place but charities are not normally allowed to accost shoppers, which is why they usually sit in the porches of supermarkets.
Actually accosting shoppers in store while they are attempting to provide for their own families, some on a really tight budget themselves, and then attempting to tell them what to buy to donate is a non -starter and I’m astounded that Tesco is not only tolerating but actually encouraging such action.
It won’t do their reputation any good.
It will do their till good as suckers buy from them for them to take the credit for being kind.
They know what they’re at.
