A new Isle of Wight community group is using sea fishing to help support people struggling with their mental health — while also tackling loneliness and isolation.
The volunteer-run initiative, called ‘Get Hooked Catching a Lifeline’, encourages Islanders to come together through a shared love of fishing, whether they want company, conversation or simply a few hours by the sea with like-minded people.
Organisers say the group is open to everyone and aims to create a supportive and welcoming environment where people can open up if and when they feel comfortable.
As well as arranging fishing meet-ups, volunteers are also helping people find accessible fishing spots and supporting those who may not have transport to get to locations around the Island.
The group also runs a WhatsApp community where members can chat, arrange trips and support each other outside of fishing sessions.
Organisers are encouraging anyone interested in joining the community to get in touch via the group’s Facebook page.
The group says all participants fish under their own liability and asks members to keep all interactions clean, respectful and kind.
