Glorious sunshine shone down on Yarmouth as hundreds of schoolchildren took part in the town’s annual Pancake Day races this morning (Tuesday).
Students from Freshwater and Yarmouth C of E Primary School, local businesses and even a ‘gurt mallishag’ were all seen embracing the festivities in celebration of Shrove Tuesday, racing through the streets of Yarmouth flipping pancakes.
Organised by the Yarmouth Carnival Committee, the Pancake Day races took place in St James’ Square. The event is held annually and sees schoolchildren separated into different year groups and ages to compete against one another to be the day’s winner.
Before the celebrations moved on to St James’ Church for refreshments, there was an opportunity for local businesses, pubs and clubs to race and take part in the pancake-flipping fun too!
A dinosaur and lion were spotted taking part in the races, with those in attendance being encouraged to appear in fancy dress.
For all competitors, the only rules of the races were to run around a ‘gurt mallishag’ – also known as a caterpillar – who had attended the celebrations, and flip their pancake at least once before crossing the finish line.
Those victorious received stickers for their efforts, with prizes also being handed out for Best Apron. The prestigious Shrove Tuesday trophy was also bestowed.
