The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the coast of the Isle of Wight – which is due to come into effect tomorrow morning (Monday).
High tide is expected to be higher than normal at 00:19 tonight due to the unsettled weather we have been experiencing. Light Westerly Force 4 winds and large waves are anticipated to hit the Island.
With the inclement weather, it increases the tide table values by 0.28 m (surge). The forecast tide is 4.85 metres Chart Datum (2.26 mAOD) at Cowes.
This alert is being issued as a precautionary measure by the EA, taking into account an underperformance in the forecast tide level last night (Saturday).
Despite the weather alert being issued, the disruption and impact are likely to be less than what the Island has observed today with many ferry cancellations.
For 1 hour either side of high water, minor flooding to seafront roads, esplanades and car parks is expected. Levels will be high at the floating bridge, Cowes. Small amounts of water could be forced up through drains at Albany Road.
It is expected the tides will remain high enough to cause minor impacts at high tide until Tuesday.
As a precautionary measure, flood protection should be installed near the floating bridge.
The EA will continue to monitor forecasts and will provide an update by 10:00 on Monday.
Sandbags have been made available at Newport Quay, St Mary’s Road car park in Cowes and Well Road in East Cowes. They are available for homes and businesses alike that may be at risk.
What you should consider doing now
- Monitor local water levels and weather conditions
- Get ready to act on your flood plan if you have one
- Move cars or other vehicles to higher ground, if it is safe to do so
- Check that you know how to turn off your gas, electricity and water mains supplies
- Avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water. 30cm of fast-flowing water can move a car and 6 inches can knock an adult off their feet
- Flood water is dangerous and may be polluted. Wash your hands thoroughly if you’ve been in contact with it
