Islanders are being reminded to use the right NHS services during the Easter holidays to ensure emergency departments remain available for those in urgent need.
With NHS services expected to be busy over the bank holiday period, NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight is encouraging families to plan ahead and be prepared for minor illnesses and injuries.
Dr Lara Alloway, Chief Medical Officer for NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight, has said:
“We want families to enjoy Easter, knowing how to manage minor illnesses and injury.
“If you or your child becomes unwell, remember that the emergency department isn’t always the best place to go. Services like NHS 111 online, pharmacies, and Urgent Treatment Centres can provide care for many common health issues.
“Having a well-stocked medicine cupboard can also be a big help. Make sure you have essentials like paracetamol, antihistamines, plasters and rehydration sachets so you’re prepared for minor illnesses over the holidays.”
Islanders are also being urged to take extra care when doing DIY, gardening or enjoying time outdoors to avoid preventable injuries that could result in unnecessary trips to hospital.
Dr Alloway added:
“Whether you’re gardening, tackling DIY, or spending time outdoors, please take care.
“Make sure you can enjoy your holiday, not spend it in emergency departments because of preventable injuries.
“If you do need medical help over the bank holiday, the NHS is here to help – and always call 999 in an emergency. If it’s not life threatening, please consider alternative services first.”
NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight is highlighting the following services available locally:

111 Lol, such a useless service.
Bring back the old NHS, not this modern day
Merry go round.
It was once a great service, nowdays it the
No Hope Service.
Such a shame it was the last decent thing this country
had!
Sadly all good things come to an end.
