More than 130 Isle of Wight pupils gave up their Saturday to take part in this year’s inter-school Mock Trial competition at Newport’s Crown Court.
The annual event, held on Saturday 6th December by kind permission of His Honour Judge Michael Bowes KC, saw 9 school teams compete in a closely fought courtroom contest. Christ the King College emerged victorious, securing the trophy which was presented by High Sheriff Jacque Gazzard.
All 3 Crown Court judges, who travelled to the Island at their own expense despite stormy conditions, praised the standard of preparation and delivery shown throughout the day.
Organisers say the competition not only showcased legal talent but actively inspired it. 6 pupils have already chosen to pursue law as a career following their experience in court on Saturday.
The Mock Trial initiative was first launched in 2012 during the High Sheriff’s term of office, with the aim of helping young Islanders gain a real understanding of the justice system. Since then, thousands of local students have taken part, with more than 60 going on to study or work in law.
The competition continues to be supported thanks to generous sponsorship from ROUSE Ltd, alongside Duxmore Botanics, Glanvilles Damant and Wight Knuckle Brewery.

Well done the students but maybe a legal profession is not the way to go now the present government are proposing to effectively abandon trial by jury.
