Island Line trains between Ryde and Shanklin have been cancelled this afternoon (Friday) due to staff shortages.
South Western Railway has confirmed that all services between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin are unable to run at this time, with disruption expected to continue until 18:00 this evening.
It has not been confirmed why the critical staff member is unavailable at short notice, but the pandemic may be to blame. The spread of COVID-19 across the country is resulting in sickness across many industries, in large down to the sheer amount of testing being conducted each and every day yielding positive results.
A new train driver is being sought to join the Island Line team in 2022, with the railway aiming to recruit and start training (no pun intended) the driver from the beginning of February – on a cool salary of £43,000 a year.

Arnt they running 2 trains peak hours from Monday?
two trains an hour will happen about 3 times a month at best. They have a better train service in India and such countries, even the mainland puts this joke to shame, are they trying to out do the floating bridge, is it a contest to see which is the most inefficient.
Does this mean that they couldn’t see over the dash board??
It’s OK, the covidiots say it’s just a cold. I bet their will reconsider their position on public health when the service they need is disrupted. Maybe if people did their civic duty instead of thinking about just themselves the staff would not be off ill.
Only yesterday several teams of experts reported that the symptoms of Omicron are ‘sniffles, headache and fatigue’ which are basically common cold symptoms. ‘Professor Tim Spector, who runs the UK’s largest Covid symptom-tracking study has said symptoms of Omicron are predominantly the same as the common cold’.
Of course, we’ll bow to your superior knowledge of the spread of viruses if you let us know where you study and which organisation you work for?
For £43,000 i might just come out of retirement and drive trains again.
Do it !!!!! You’re island Needs You ..
Ferry problems !!! Red Jet problems !!!! Train problems !!!
Not to mention the Non Floating bridge!!!!!…..
Supposedly due back Monday???
Covid cases on the Rise !!!!!
Merry Christmas .
I always thought that island rail was a part of the national rail network ?
Why not borrow a couple of mainland drivers ?
Oh, I forgot, this is the isle of wight and us islanders are treated like 3rd class citizens.
