John and Lyn King, who passed away when their car plunged off the cliff at The Needles earlier this month, died as a result of multiple injuries and inhalation of water, an inquest opening has heard.
The bodies of the married couple, 67-year-old John Paul King and his 66-year-old wife Lyn Philippa King, were discovered at the foot of the cliff on the evening of Friday 6th June, as previously reported by Island Echo.
At the opening held at the Isle of Wight Coroners Court earlier today (Monday), the court heard how a member of the public had first alerted Police to the situation after they witnessed a silver Ford Mondeo leave the road and go over the cliff.
A multi-agency rescue operation involving the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, HM Coastguard and the RNLI was launched, but sadly, nothing could be done to save the married couple’s lives. A pair of Dachshund dogs also died.
Former bus driver John was born in Ealing, and his wife, a retired shop assistant, originally hailed from Ilkeston in Derbyshire. Most recently, the couple lived on Arctic Road in Cowes.
A Home Office Post Mortem carried out on 10th June recorded that both John and Lyn died as a result of multiple injuries and inhalation of water.
HM Senior Coroner Caroline Sumeray adjourned proceedings until a provisional date of 29th December 2025.
Condolences were passed onto John and Lyn’s family.
So sad, RIP
So very sad, may they be at peace now. X
