A Wroxall man who rolled his car after taking a corner too quickly has been handed 7 penalty points and fined £384.
William Scovell, 21, of Mountfield Road in Wroxall pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court this morning (Tuesday).
As previously reported by Island Echo, Police were called to Staplers Road near the former Lavender Farm shortly after 22:30 on 4th November last year.
At the scene, a red Toyota Yaris was found on its roof in the middle of the carriageway with debris all over the road. The car had rolled several times after coming too quickly around a left-hand bend.
Scovell and his 3 female passengers escaped serious injury with just cuts, bruises and scratches sustained in the smash.
The 21-year-old, who had only been driving for 6 months, made himself known to Police and admitted in interview that he was a new driver who had simply been carrying too much speed in the corner, also admitting he was distracted after getting into a verbal altercation with 1 of his passengers.
Defending himself, Scovell told the court that at the time of the incident he was a ‘cocky’ driver and that his driving style has significantly changed since the events of that rainy November evening.
After a brief deliberation, Magistrates sentenced Scovel handing him 7 penalty points on his licence. The 21-year-old landscaper was also fined £384 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £154 surcharge fee.
Due to being a new driver (obtaining more than 6 points in 2 years), Scovell’s licence will now be revoked.
In sentencing, Magistrates said:
“You and your passengers were very lucky as this could’ve been a lot worse”.

I recall the Yaris advertising strapping used to be “You could love it too much”……but it changed to “Treat it with respect”. Maybe our young driver had the older model.
Bruh lmao like all you have to do is turn the steering wheel LoL
A car loaded with passengers performs in a completely way compared to when it’s just the driver. Add speed into the mix and a crash is inevitable, even for an experienced driver. An inexperienced driver won’t stand a chance as this ‘cocky’ driver found out, the hard way!
So lucky no one was killed. Well his driving style is going to change again, welcome to Southern Vectis and when he finally passes his driving test again massive insurance premiums will give him more time to reflect on his stupidity.
When I passed my driving test, the instructor said to me, now you can go away and buy yourself a Buick. But you really should go and buy a Mini.
Basically, there should be a standard for new drivers, a P plate, a speed limit and a limit on passenger numbers for the first year. We have all done it, showed off to mates, taken chances, but we learnt from it. Now cars are so fast, so quiet and our roads are so dangerous. What could possibly go wrong?
I still have a clean licence, but expect to get points for 22mph in a 20mph limit, and straying into a bus lane to turn left,
And without doubt, finding my road tax has run out because the DVLA only send out reminders ‘out of courtesy’ so I was told!
You don’t get points for straying into a bus lane.
It is your responsibility to obey speed limits and doing so is a core driving skill.
It is your responsibility to ensure your vehicle is properly maintained, taxed, insured and MOTd.
A Yaris is pretty gutless (68bhp and 0-60 in 15 seconds), so this guy was driving the equivalent of your “Mini.
I would also a certain engine capacity.
Good that he had the decency to admit his mistakes. So many (mainly older drivers) think it’s everyone else’s fault.
What is decent about that he is scum and put everybody else’s life at risk.
What a horrible thing to say. Have an early night, mate. You clearly need it.
Idiots like this should get a lifetime driving ban. That would be a better deterrent. Bang them up if ever caught driving again.
Maybe his passengers could sue him for damages too. I’m sure their bodies were shaken badly, and their minds would certainly have been affected. Now that would have more of an impact than 7 penalty points!
Don’t be a melt
Another idiotic comment. Do you wear a ‘blackshirt’ per chance?
Only when marching with the spirit of Oswald Mosley in my worst nightmares.
Look at that photo – despite rolling over several times with the additional weight of passengers, it’s roof held up. Most cars of the previous era would not have offered that protection, this is what prevented fatalities in this case.
Really driver training needs to have speed awareness and other issues addressed, before a learner is allowed to take the test – rather than learn after the event; then the roads will be that much safer for us all.
Is there a politician prepared to stand on this in the coming General Election, if so he’ll have my and many other’s vote, I’m sure.
ALL island drivers should have a driving test every 3 years there all inexperienced drivers just look how many end up on there roofs over there
You are a complete idiot, i have been driving since 1976, an advanced class 1, so do not tar everyone with your ignorant brush.
I learned to drive in Essex and passed my test first time. I loved driving so much I became an Advanced Driver having taken the Police Roadcraft course. One of the first things I noticed when I moved here 35 years ago, was how different IoW drivers were. Overtaking on bends, ignoring speed limits, careering along narrow roads, not being prepared for traffic in the opposite direction, my list is long. Last year, now aged 75, the DVSA would not extend my licence until my driving had been appraised. Had a two hour refresher course with a retired Road Traffic Cop which I very much enjoyed and went on to the rather scary appraisal. Marked A -D, 11 categories, I was given 8 As and 3 Bs. If you love driving, learn to do it properly. Please!
Well said colleague.
