This is your weekly round-up of the latest court news, covering some of the cases heard by the Isle of Wight Combined Court over the past week.

Week to 26th October 2018
• Daniel Grant, 41, of Charnwood Close, Newport admitted driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level above limit when he appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday. He blew 91 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit is 35.
Grant was handed a 24 month driving ban – which can be reduced to 18 months by completing a drink drivers course – as well as a 12 month community order. He was also ordered to complete 50 hours unpaid work and pay £85 costs with a £85 surcharge.
• Lachen Downs, 20, of Clarendon Road in Southsea appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court accused of intentionally touching a child over the age of 14 and that the touching was sexual, as well as keeping a child away from a responsible person.
He pleaded not guilty to both charges and elected for a trial in the Crown Court. The case has been adjourned to the Isle of Wight Crown Court on 26th November. Mr Downs was given conditional bail.
• Amy Ann Hawes, 25, of Sevenacres, Newport was due to appear before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court for sentencing on Tuesday. She previously admitted 2 counts of assault by beating and the commission of a further offence whilst subject to a conditional discharge. The case was adjourned until 12th November for a pre-sentence report to be produced.
• Kenneth Richard James Jenkins, 31, of East Ashey Lane, Ashey admitted driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level above limit and driving whilst unfit through drink when he appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court this morning (Friday). He blew 121 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit is 35.
Jenkins was banned from driving for 30 months and fined £200. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs with a £30 surcharge.
• Jay Rhys Pearson, 19, of High Street, Newport admitted a string of offences when he appeared before Magistrates on Tuesday. He pleaded guilty to 2 charges of assaulting a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm (ABH); assault by beating; racially/religiously aggravated fear/provocation of violence by words/writing and racially/religiously aggravated common assault/beating. He also admitted charges of criminal damage, being drunk and disorderly in a public place and obstructing a constable in the execution of their duty in regards to a separate incident.
Magistrates handed Pearson a 6 month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. He was ordered to complete 20 days of rehabilitation and pay £600 in compensation – £150 to each victim.
• Abdul Bari, 28, of HMP Isle of Wight was due to appear before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court via video link accused of assaulting a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm (ABH). However, Tuesday’s hearing was adjourned for 2 weeks until 6th November.
• Alex Cooper, 20, of Fort Street, Sandown was given a condition discharge at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court this morning (Friday). He appeared in front of Magistrates for theft – other after stealing a charity box containing £6.60. His personal circumstances were taken into account.
• Gavin Hughes, 42, of Cae Caradog, Caerphilly (Wales) failed to appear before Magistrates via video link on Tuesday. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
• Simon Flux, 36, of St Swithins Crescent, Yarmouth pleaded guilty to assault by beating. He appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday where he was handed a conditional discharge (6 months) and ordered to pay £85 costs with a £20 surcharge.
