This is your weekly round-up of the latest court news, covering some of the cases heard by the Isle of Wight Combined Court over the past week.

Week to 16th November 2018
• Josh Courtney, 26, of HMP Isle of Wight appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court via video link on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to common assault against District Judge Timothy Pattinson.
Courtney received a 2 week prison sentence, which is to run concurrent to his existing 10-year sentence. He was also ordered to pay £115 – but he will not have to pay this until he is freed from custody.
• Brian Mitchell, 42, of Union Street in Ryde admitted no less than 4 charges of burglary and 1 of attempted burglary at the Isle of Wight Crown Court on Monday. Mitchell, with 43 previous convictions, appeared via video link.
Mitchell was given a 1 year prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.
• Michael Robert Bunce, 40, of Newport Street in Ryde admitted theft from a shop when he appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court last Friday.
Bunce was given a 6 month conditional discharge. He was also ordered to pay £105 and £10 in compensation.
• Ben Cooney, 20, of East Cowes Road in Whippingham appeared before the Isle of Wight Crown Court this week for being in breach of a suspended sentence. Cooney was previously convicted of aggravated vehicle taking, but failed to complete 35 rehabilitation days.
Judge David Melville sentenced Cooney to 4 months in a youth detention centre.
• Gavin Richardson, 38, of Nelson Drive in Cowes admitted using threatening/abusive/insulting words/behaviour with intent to cause fear of/provoke unlawful violence and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place when he appeared in court on Monday.
Magistrates gave Richardson a 12 month community order and ordered him to pay £85 costs, a £40 fine and a £85 surcharge.
• Richardo Silva, 32, of St Paul’s Avenue, Shanklin pleaded guilty to driving whilst disqualified, driving without third party insurance and driving without an MOT certificate when he appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court last Friday.
Silva was handed a 6 week prison sentenced, suspended for 12 months. He also received 6 points on his licence and was ordered to pay £85 in costs with a £115 surcharge.
Holland was ordered to pay each business back for the damage caused, to the total of £2,557, as well as £85 in court costs with a £30 surcharge. He was also fined £260.
• John Phillip Squire, 32, of Mountbatten Drive in Ryde – formally of The Fairway, Lake – appeared before Magistrates last Friday where he admitted a charge of driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level above limit and another charge of using a motor vehicle on a road without third party insurance.
Squire was caught on Kite Hill in Wootton on 25th October and blew 42 on the breathalyser – the legal limit is 35. For the 2 offences he was banned from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay £85 in costs with a £30 surcharge. He was also fined £80.
• Amy Ann Hawes, 25, of Sevenacres in Newport was sentenced for 3 offences at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Monday. She was convicted on 25th September for 2 charges of assault by beating and a single charge of commissioning of further offence whilst subject to a conditional discharge.
Hawes, which is sectioned under the Mental Health Act, was sentenced to 3 months in prison – suspended for 12 months. She was ordered to pay £50 compensation.
