The West Wight Neighbourhoods Policing Team would like to identify and speak to 2 people as part of their ongoing enquiries into an incident in Freshwater in which a dog attacked 2 Swans.
Police received a report at 19:41 on Friday 7th April that a dog had chased and attacked swans near The Causeway. Unfortunately, the 2 swans subsequently died.
A spokesperson from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“We appreciate the image is not the best quality, but perhaps you know these people and can recognise them from their clothing and the dark-coloured dog which can be seen in the picture.
“If you know the people pictured, or this is you, please contact police on 101 quoting 44230137683.”

Why don’t these vile people just turn themselves in you know who you are just do the right thing
probably because thety are back in London by now..
Do you honestly think that the DFL types would dress like that or go anywhere near mud like that? My money is on our own home grown middle class sadly.
The clothes give it away, many years ago a dog (DFL) and its hipster no need for a lead man owner (lady) allowed her Lurcher to stalk for an attack on my two young boys who i had to put up on a ledge on the cliff nr Atherfield and grab an old jack russel up there too..i threw some hefty rocks at the lurcher but it did nothing it was locked on and they landed close to it! then the lady started shouting about calling the police on me and then the dog made another step all low down ready to go for it and my younger jack russell shot out like a missile and stopped it in its tracks..owner had matching bandana to the one around the dogs neck..they could be down from Brighton?? if local they’d be dobbed in by now.
So by that comment one can assume you know their identity and could forward that information to the relevant authority so that redress could be actioned.Or are you just spouting the usual Vectis vitriol towards anyone not from this tainted isle?
read the words brainiac i was refering to the event on the beach, imlplying that overners do have dogs that go nuts here off the lead..if that dog was local it wouldve seen those swans lots of times and not be interested..whereas city dogs don’t meet anything wild and some react badly when they do..but you’d know that eh..
There are swans in London… also lots of other wild life. London has several prestigious parks that are home to plenty of swan, geese and squirrels. It’s not all concrete. There are also canals that also have the above mentioned wildlife.
I don’t know why so many have voted you down. It is a high probability they are visitors or really thick! Look at their footwear they have on for walking across either very wet sand or mud! Totally inappropriate would indicate to me visitors who don’t know the land that well?
I should think they have only ventured into the mud to try and retrieve their dog.
It beggers belief, seems people on here don’t like reality..as for that Steve bloke, what on earth is he on about..I’d say several G and T’s..lol.
Why must they be from London?
Typical inbred islander comment. Londoners wouldn’t dress like that, they have better dress sense. Go strap your 6 toes together so you can get your shoes on.
It’s a swan, dogs chase birds all the time why is a swan any different? It’s not like this attack has declined the population of swans is it? Swans are an aggressive type of bird anyway and just like us humans attacking each other why is it any different for the animal kingdom? but humans tend to go naww how cute but nature is cruel, nature doesn’t care for our sense of naww how cute. People are neive to what we are and what kind of world we have created. We created this by making dogs fashionable and dont get me started on the poor pugs you put in your handbag, poor creatures cant breathe!! I’m probably going to get alot of you hating but c’mon why is a swan any different to a crow?
At last, some sense.
Well, for a start, swans are protected by the Queen, or presumably, the King now. Secondly, swans mate for life and so there is now a lone swan missing it’s partner and thirdly, it’s just bloody savage! And incidentally, swans are not aggressive unless they are protecting their young.
So yourself and Jamie forbes have an unenviable IQ level it would appear.
Perhaps the photo is of you both walking your shitting machine?
Very stupid comment but I am not surprised any animal doesn’t deserve that type of death
Why do you call them vile people ?
In the photo you can clearly see them wading through the mud, trying to reach their dog, to stop it from attacking the swans, they are doing all they can.
Dog looks to be way off-lead amongst these protected birds. If those photographed poeple were actually responsible for the dog, why don’t they come forward to the Police? What a ghastly situation.
There would be no point, as it’s clear that what happened was completely unintended. The Police don’t even bother to apprehend drug dealers these days, so why condemn these people ?
Should be on lead end off
I am a dog lover BUT absolutely sick of people not keeping their dogs on leads! All I hear is “my dog wouldn’t do that” they are animals, they do, it’s not their fault it’s the owners……..
To those who think that dogs on leads in public is “punishing” the dog shame on you – is this acceptable, a loose dog attacking swans & killing them! Yes it’s also the owners fault but until the law changes to keeping dogs on leads this will continue to happen.
NO dog is 100% reliable & behaves every single time, their natural instinct is to chase.
Too many dog attacks on humans/wildlife now happening – the law needs to change!
How many dogs are walked each day? How many attacks occur? I totally agree dogs need to be under control, and that is what the law states, but forcing dog owners to keep dogs leaded in public (whatever ‘public’ means) is not the answer. This attack is despicable and is totally the fault of the owner, but it also does not need a blanket overaction.
This is not the only dog attack on wild life is it!!! Too many dog attacks on humans as well as wildlife are happening on nearly a daily basis. The only way this can stop is to keep dogs on leads when out walking. Yes accidents can happen I.e collar /lead snaps but this is going to be less often than the attacks by “loose” dogs. There is no way to police any dog owner to make sure they have 100% control of their dog – not even having a dog licence will stop attacks, the only way is keeping dogs on leads!!
Compare the number of attacks to the number of dogs walked, it is going to be a VERY small percentage (certainly not a daily or even weekly occurrence). I walk my dog off lead 80% of the time but always put her on lead when needed. A blanket “keep your dogs on lead 100% of the time” is stupid and detrimental to the dogs. I have a working bread that needs a high level of exercise which she would not get on lead all the time. Some dog owners need better education and a better understanding of their responsibilities while walking their dog. You cannot punish all dog owners because there are some irresponsible ones, that’s like stopping everyone from driving because some people drink and drive!
Somebody must recognise these scum
Disgusting language used to smear others, so unnecessary.
I am appalled that these idiots have not come forward to answer to the charge that their dog killed two beautiful creatures willy nilly!!!! You let it off the lead without any forethought as to what it may do so in reality YOU killed those two swans!!!!!!
This is what happens when you tame an animal…
Just ffs put them on a lead you self entitled imbeciles.
Oh, and clean up behind your damn shitting machines!
dog licences needed and keep on leads at all times, common sense
On leads at all times…. Don’t be ridiculous!
Totally irresponsible, stupid owners. Those poor birds died because of human ignorance.
I hope someone recognises them. This situation will not be taken lightly. It horrible and more to the point, all Swans in this country are protected by the Crown, therefore it is an offence to kill the Kings swans
Isn’t it an offence to kill a swan ,I’m sure it’s a royal protected bird
During the breeding season (April – July) keep your dog on a short lead or under close control in areas such as moorland, grasslands, loch shores and the seashore to avoid disturbing birds that nest on the ground. FARM ANIMALS. Never let your dog worry or attack farm.
Dog has a lead deficiency..
Well they should get a long long prison sentence without being cut short. Dirty humans,
Dog owners can’t accept that letting their dogs to run around like mutt maniacs is intimidating and terrifying to decent people. We don’t love your dogs, we fear them, their invasion of our space is unacceptable.
This swan event is disgraceful. Many dogs are a menace to society, they’re unstable and potentially dangerous.
