The world’s last seagoing paddle steamer, the PS Waverley, has begun her 2026 sailing season as the historic vessel celebrates 80 years since first launching on the Clyde in 1946.
Crowds gathered on the quayside in Glasgow last week (Friday) as Waverley returned to service for her landmark anniversary year, kicking off a nationwide programme of cruises around the UK coastline.
The famous paddle steamer is set to return to the South Coast and Isle of Wight between Thursday 3rd and Tuesday 22nd September as part of her 2026 sailing schedule.
During the anniversary season, Waverley will visit destinations across the Clyde Coast, Inner Hebrides, South Cornwall and South Devon, Bristol Channel and South Wales, North Wales, the Mersey and the Thames Estuary.
PS Waverley remains the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer and continues to attract thousands of passengers each year.
Paul Semple, General Manager of Waverley Excursions, has said:
“Today marks the beginning of a very special season for Waverley as she returns to service celebrating 80 years since her launch.
“Eight decades on, passengers can still experience the unique sights, sounds and atmosphere of travelling aboard a real steamship and we are delighted to see Waverley back sailing after a winter refit which saw a £1.5 million investment in the ship.”
Passengers travelling aboard Waverley can hear the ship’s telegraph ring, visit the Engine Room, watch the steam engines in motion and see the paddles turning through the portholes.
Full catering facilities are available onboard, including snacks, meals, refreshments and access to the ship’s souvenir shop.
Bookings for the 2026 season are now open via Waverley Excursions or by calling 0141 243 2224.
