UPDATED: Eight horses have run wild through Ryde town this morning (Friday) putting members of the public and motorists in danger, with reports of the horses running across Ryde Esplanade in front of oncoming vehicles.
Officers from Hampshire Constabulary were called to the area between Ryde seafront and St John’s Hill just before 10:00 after receiving reports of a number of the animals without their riders, despite being tacked up.
Island Echo understands that a 14-year-old female has been treated by paramedics and taken to St Mary’s Hospital with minor injuries, with a series of other riders receiving cuts and bruises in the incident. Children as young as 9 were on a riding lesson to the beach when a few of the pupils fell from their horse losing control of the animals, resulting in the escape.
Members of the public assisted staff from Trotter’s Riding School in rounding up the 8 horses, before they were taken back to the stables in Ashey at around 11:20. Three of the horses were held in East Street, as photographed by Samantha Cammack-Harding.
UPDATE @ 16:00 – The young female taken to St Mary’s Hospital has been discharged, according to an NHS spokesperson.
The incident comes just over 12 months since a similar incident occurred in the town with a single horse, as reported by Island Echo.
