A 38-year-old man from Newport appeared in court from the cells this week after stealing honey and sesame oil from a Chinese takeaway in Shanklin.
Cameron Warren, of Nelson Road, failed to appear before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on 6th March, resulting in a warrant being issued for his arrest. Before he could be picked up he handed himself in and was held in custody, then put before the next available court on Tuesday (24th March).
It was at Tuesday’s hearing that Warren pleaded guilty to both theft offences – to the value of £50.
The court heard from prosecutor Roxanne Cole that at the time of the offending, the defendant was squatting in a shed near a side alleyway, which had direct access to the takeaway’s food storage pantry.
When Warren was asked why he was stealing, he claimed he was bringing the items back.
Jim Osbourne, defending, reassured the bench that his client deeply regrets the ‘impulsive’ drunken moment as he has a good relationship with the owner of the establishment, who was previously his neighbour.
Mr Osbourne also stated that his client did not mean to miss his previous court hearing and that the issue was a matter of misplacing his bail sheet, and he handed himself in at Newport Police Station when he found out.
Warren was ordered to pay fines of £160, compensation of £50 and a £64 surcharge.
