Retail chain Home Bargains has announced that they are to close stores up and down the country on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day as a way to give back to their staff.
The news was announced at the company’s recent annual conference.
Stores will close at 17:00 on Christmas Eve to allow staff to spend time with loved ones, friends and families, re-opening on 27th December.
The Island has one Home Bargains store located on Carisbrooke Retail Park on Gunville Road.

it is a time for families to celebrate.
Wouldn’t it be lovely if every business was to follow in their footsteps. They did some time ago though! Shame the NHS has to work
why should all of us be subjected to a denial of services just because christians say so.

NO- those services all run themselves. I don’t need anyone sitting in my lounge waiting for me to ask a question about my gas/electric/water/router etc.
no they do not run themselves – who works at the power plants, the water treatment facilities, the internet service providers – without the staff there, the water will stop coming out of your taps in no time.
i’m guessing martin that you do realise that power plants are not automatically connected to underground oil and gas wells – gas does need to be pumped out of the ground, processed and piped to the plants or in some cases, trucked.

if christians wish to observe their festival then fine, but the rest of us shouldn’t have to endure it and be denied shops, travel and other services.

the uk is secular and religion has had its day.
It really does not have much to do with the Christian faith these days, most people (like me) just appreciate the break from working and some time with friends and family (also quite like good food and presents).
So they are giving them the holidays that they are entitled to as no shop is open Christmas day , these are bank holidays .Very generous of them.
People are not entitled to bank holidays off work. It is at the discretion of their employer who does not have to pay if you want/have bank holidays off work. Blackgang Chine, Robin Hill, and other attractions all work on bank holidays but do not pay you extra or give time off in lieu. A generous employer would of course.
The only reason the employers you quote don’t pay is because they keep their workers on ‘Zero Hours’ contracts a bit like the work houses of the 19th century.
No. Even the permanent staff are treated the same.
Actually yes they do they are added to your holiday entitlement for the year , those stores that open on bank days
Not every employer does this because they are not compelled to do so. Citizen’s Advice states:
“It’s up to your employer to decide whether or not you have to work on bank holidays. If your place of work is closed on bank holidays, your employer can make you take them as part of your annual leave entitlement.”
And this is newsworthy lol
Sorry but they are having a laugh if they really meant it they would shut from Christmas Eve to the New Year so all workers Christian or not can spend time with their families.
All this does is save them having to pay their staff extra for bank holiday working.
And all their energy costs of having a store open.
