The Isle of Wight Council has revealed further plans to rake in some extra funding within its 2026/27 Budget, this time in the form of a £30 wheelie bin replacement fee.
If approved, Islanders can expect to have to cough up a £30 fee for the loss of wheelie bins, as well as an unclarified ‘admin’ fee for those who are repeat ‘misplacers’.
Many residents fight a constant bin battle this time of year as strong winds strike the Island, taking many bins with it.
Victims of the natural bin thief will now have to pay the damages, subsidising an additional £206,000 a year for the Council.
This move comes as Veolia ES (UK) Limited was awarded the £60million contract to take over the Island’s waste management contract for an initial 2 years.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Thalia Waste Management has backed out of their £225million contract, with the local authority and Island residents expecting Thalia’s service for another 15 years.
Veolia Environmental Services began working with the Isle of Wight Council in January, with the first 3 months of 2026 dedicated to consultancy and mobilisation, assisting with the early termination of the current agreement and preparing to assume operational responsibility.
From 1st April this year, Veolia will take over full household refuse collection and disposal services across the Isle of Wight. The agreement is set to run until 31st March 2028, during which time the Isle of Wight Council intends to retender for a new long-term arrangement, similar to the original 25-year deal Thalia is stepping away from.

More ways to screw cash from us, we are paying council tax to have those bins provided
Nope from me.
Bring back the good old fashioned metal bins,
they didn’t blow away like this plastic rubbish.
Also better for the environment.
We are kept being told plastic is no good yet they
keep churning out plastic wheelie bins
WHY!
Many shops have stopped selling plastic bags due to the
damage being done to the environment
Very confusing this green agenda, am I driving an EV
for nothing.
I am tempted to go back to Diesel.
Wise idea going back to diesel. Still cheaper in the long run.
All this facade about green “tax” is just another money spinner to make us pay more.
It’s the pay per mile idea that is putting me off
my EV
Unbelievable! They force these monstrosities onto our streets and then have the nerve to charge. All this will do is cause thefts of bins. This council are a disgrace.
Available to order:
2nd hand stolen wheelie bin. Choice of colours, green or black or brown.
£10 each.
That’s a good one.

That’s unfair. I gave up getting a replacement card insert after the refuse collectors lost mine roughly every 4 weeks.
People will start taking other people’s bins if theirs are damaged or lost. Then there will be an increase of using public bins for domestic waste and more fly tipping.
Very true, they will encourage people to fly tip or
use other persons bins to dispose of their rubbish.
It’s a recipe for disaster
Yes, there is no provision in the request for replacement to say that “the waste company took it away” – you just have to report it to Police and get a crime number. Nice little earner.
And there are certainly questions to be answered about the “withdrawal” of Thalia. Cllr Jordan?
What you need to do is fill out the form on the Island Council website site and fill the comments box with a rant about incompetence and poorly trained staff.
I have had at least 4 in the last 2 years because it’s too difficult to do the job properly.
While they’re at it, how about putting the rubbish in the lorry instead of on the road where they roundly ignore it.
Surely if Thalia backed out of the contract then they are liable to pay compensation? Waste collection is already covered by council tax so why are we being asked to pay more. The allocation of bins and replacements should be negotiated in the waste contract. It’s unfair if a bin goes missing or is damaged through no fault of the homeowner.
Maybe a 25 year contract is too daunting. Why not start with a 5 or 10 year tender and extend it from there based on performance from contractor and obligation from council. It seems very all or nothing.
Precisely the case.
Sick in the head this council
Or should I say natural council thieves
The strange things with wheelie bins.
Why o why do the refuse collectors always put the black insert back in, the wrong way round, more often than not damaging them in the few seconds they are emptying them?
Technically the bin is the property of the council, so how legal is it for us to deface it by writing our address on it in indelible ink or paint. Stickers can be removed by the National bin thieves when they redistribute them at the bargain prices that are on offer out there.
They can quite literally get FUCKED.If mine falls apart it stays apart wankers.
Maybe the council should pay us a monthly rental for the storage of their bins on our property?
I’ve had about 6 replacement inner black paper recycling containers for the green bins in recent years. 3 in one year. All where smashed and cracked by the refuge collectors throwing them on the ground. They ended up with big chunks, cracks and corners missing and sharp jagged edges. The last replacement lasted 24 hr before they smashed that as well. The current one i have is now held together with tape after being smashed to bits a couple of weeks ago on collection day. The council have been good at supplying replacements. But it must be costing a fortune if it is common across the Island. The paper recycle buckets either need to be made from a less brittle black plastic or the staff trained not to throw them to the ground. The thought of paying every time they destroy them is out of the question !
It makes one wonder why we pay council tax!
When I go to a Barbers I don’t take my own scissors or comb.
When I go to Costa I don’t take my own cup or mug.
When I go to Wetherspoons for a meal I don’t take my own
knife and fork or glass for a Beer.
But I pay nearly £3,000.00 a year Council tax and am expected
to purchase a bin should it go missing eg gets blown away or
damaged in the wind, or someone pinches it.
Lol
Britain 2026
a lot of the bins get damaged when being emptied and mysteriously the black card inserts go missing at the same time.
The answer to all this is to sweep this rubbish council away in may elections and replace it with people who want to do public service not self service like this lot.
What about all the card inserts and bins ” misplaced ” by the bin emptying lot?
Very often I have to seek my bin out, and have had at least 4 inserts replaced due to the inserts being heaved into the lorry by someone who can’t be bothered to do it properly.
How about charging people for leaving their bins out in the street week in, week out?
Maybe if the operators actually put the bins back where they got them from, they would not get”lost”. We often have to walk down the road to retrieve ours. It’s not like it’s hard work anymore.
This is nonsensical in fact as it is usually the bin men..sorry, waste operatives..who annihilate the paper trays when they empty them!!! Patent Craziness to charge the careful owner.
Some homes have more than 1 bin, have they taken other
households bins.
I have 1 of each which I lock in a small bin shed, some
people would take anything thesedays.
Instead of the endless quest to extort more money from Council Tax payers why don’t they try to find ways of cutting back on wasting money on whatever whacky scheme they amuse themselves with?
Best way to do that is lay off unnesseccary staff.
All councils around the country employ too much
clutter.
It is costing the country billions of pounds in salaries and
pensions, not to mention sick pay.
You would be amazed how many Government employees
have been shirking from home since the pandemic.
It is shocking and unsustainable.
Bin Ownership:-
The council introduced wheely bins, the council provided the wheely bins so therefore they remain the property of the council not the home owner directly.
Unless the council made you agree in writing and sign for said bins in that after delivery the bins, you became owner of the bins, and therefore your responsibility to replace if it became damaged or lost due to your miss use of said bin(s).
Bin Collection Day:-
I believe like most councils in there standard guidance it states the home owner/tenant should place the bin within easy access of your property or (designated collection point) to the adjacent public footway/highway but not directly on it. I appreciate this may be an issue is quite a few places on the island in which case the council/resident(s) could engage to agree some form of secure bin day collection point.
The refuse collector is therefore duty bound to place the bin(s) back onto the property or (designated collection point) to where they accessed it from and not leave it out on said public footway/highway to cause an obstruction or injury or get blown down the street and possibly damaged or lost.
Collectors Responsibility:-
If the bin collector fails to place your bin back to where it was when collected and bin causes an accident or injury or gets damaged from being blown over or blown down the street with the same results they become liable if proven to have done so.
I have had 3 black inserts for my recycling bin lost in the waste truck by the collection guys
Well they have to find the money for their pay rise somewhere. So we will all fund it for them then as we don’t get to choose.
Pay £30 for a replacement bin?….Not on your nelly!
They get enough money from me already and It would hardly be my fault the bin is not returned to my gate after being emptied. The answer would be to go back to the good old days when refuse collectors actually take the rubbish from your property which would minimise misplacement of bins or having them blowing about in the road due to high winds. Although I believe this is available at additional costs or free if you live alone and need assistance through a disability.
