UPDATED: The Cowes Floating Bridge has been taken out service this morning (Wednesday) due to a very high tide.
It’s not just vehicles that will have to make their way around the River Medina… the now-regular passenger launch is also unable to operate as the tide has started to flood the landing pontoon.
The Isle of Wight Council say they will provide an update on the East Cowes to Cowes service when the tide drops and they can resume a timetabled operation. It is anticipated this will be in around 2 hours time.
A flood alert was issued by the Environment Agency yesterday afternoon advising of spray overtopping sea defences and flooding of seafront roads, esplanades and car parks. They also stated that water levels would be very high up slipways in Cowes and Medina Road at the floating bridge.
According to the Environment Agency, today’s weather will result in a 0.48 m (surge) giving a forecast tide of 4.92 metres Chart Datum (2.33 mAOD) at Cowes, and 3.78m Chart Datum (1.8mAOD) at Yarmouth.
UPDATE @ 12:29 – The Cowes Floating Bridge has now resumed a timetabled service following a drop in the tide.
