Just days after the Island was basking in glorious Summer sunshine, a yellow weather warning for up to 50mm of heavy rain has been issued for the Isle of Wight.
Forecasters at IW Met Service say that a very complex weather pattern is currently affecting southern parts of the UK with numerous showers and thunderstorms developing over a very wide area.
It’s believed that an area of heavy showers is likely to move up from the southeast to affect the Island around dawn tomorrow (Wednesday), with some places seeing up to 25mm of rainfall.
As we move through the morning, further showers – potentially even thunderstorms – will develop, some of which could be rather slow moving leading to very large rainfall totals in some parts – as much as 50mm.
The thunderstorm risk continues into the afternoon before finally fading away during the evening.
Jamie Russell, Chief Forecaster at IW Met Service, says:
”The confidence on the afternoon showers and storms is somewhat higher than the early morning shower potential, but there are some rather complicated issues that may impact shower/storm development.
”If we see a significant amount of cloud and showers during the earlier spell, and this cloud lingers through the morning, it may well hinder the development of any afternoon showers and storms, leading to a cloudy afternoon with occasional showers here and there and feeling rather chilly but without too much in the way of torrential downpours, however, if the early morning showers and storms don’t develop at all, or or well scattered, we may see an enhanced afternoon storm risk, with extremely high rainfall totals”.
Islanders are warned about the risk of localised flash flooding in the usual prone locations, as well as surface water along with tree debris on some roads leading to difficult driving conditions.
There is a risk of cloud to ground lightning
Polluted storm water from outfalls could well affect the Island’s beaches.
The warning is in force from 04:00 to 20:00 tomorrow.

It’s over. Back to jumpers, long trousers and the telly for 8 months or so.
If it rains that heavy how many drivers will find tree’s and hedges to drive into, formula 1 drivers put rain tyre’s on road drivers still on normal tyres but the surface will be WET.
Bit of a weird comment, F1 cars are on slicks if dry only changing depending on weather. Think you’ll find all car tryes are all weather – when was the last time you changed your slicks to intermediate or even wet on your car?
Drive to the conditions its not rocket science.
Ok, so 50mm sounds horrendous, let’s not forget 50mm is really only 2 inches!
Luckily it is one coming down in small doses so hopefully the ground will manage the massive downpours predicted. Can’t wait butts have been empty for weeks and garden beginning to look like a dessert.
