Haylands Primary School is celebrating a remarkable achievement after its Under-11 football team reached the national final of the prestigious English Schools’ Football Association (ESFA) Pokémon Cup, held at Stoke City FC’s bet365 Stadium on Friday 16th May.
After months of tough competition and determination, the team finished 5th in the country – a stunning result out of more than 5,000 schools that entered the tournament from across England and the first Isle of Wight team to reach the national finals.
Sports Coach Jack Austin, who led the team throughout their journey, said:
“This group of players has been outstanding from the very start – not just in their football ability but in their team spirit, resilience, and commitment. To make it all the way to the final and come 5th nationally is a fantastic accomplishment.”
The final, played on a professional pitch at Stoke City FC, was an unforgettable experience for the young footballers, who were cheered on by proud family members and school staff.
Headteacher Katrina Shaer added:
“We are incredibly proud of our team. Their achievement is a reflection of their hard work and the supportive community around them. This moment has inspired our whole school and shown what can be achieved with dedication and teamwork.”
