In the first weeks of every new year, newspapers magazines and websites are full of articles encouraging its readers to try something different over the next twelve months.
We are pushed towards taking up new hobbies, losing weight, getting fit, changing careers… Then it all goes quiet. Well, here at the Island Echo we are better than that. We also know – from personal experience – that sometimes we all need another little push. It is exactly halfway through the year so what better time to provide that nudge in the direction of a happier, more fulfilling life?
Weather or Not
Another good reason to reconsider your resolutions now is that everything always looks better when the sun is shining and the days are longer. Also, we aren’t just coming off the back of the festive period where our bodies and bank balances have already taken a hammering. That said, for those who do crave a bit of tropical sunshine in the depths of winter, now is the time to plan for next winter’s deals. Miami is hosting January’s Superbowl, a city that already ticks the boxes for all family members with its shopping, its beaches, the nearby Keys and of course Orlando’s Disney World. Closer to home though, our island is blessed with some of the best weather in Britain, so there is no excuse for anyone not to think outside the box and do something different for the remaining six months.
A Change of Lifestyle

It is not too late to get involved in the 26 Mile Challenge, but if you do, why not use that experience as a springboard to get fitter and more healthy? It doesn’t have to involve a gym, there are walking groups all over the island.
If there is not one near you, why not form your own? It is a great way to get and stay healthy; see our wonderful countryside and meet new people. Getting healthy is not just about exercise however. What you put into your body is as important as what you do with it. People in the UK are beginning to see that cooking is more than just a way of putting a meal onto the plate. It is a fascinating way of discovering flavours and techniques, and how to combine them. It is also a fun and social way to eating healthier, but tastier food. Not only that, we have one of the nation’s best cookery schools right here on the Island.
You can also make the decision to help other people within your community or even family. The excellent Shared Lives week has just finished, but that is no excuse not to reach out and spend some time, even if it is just a chat or a weekly coffee, with someone who you know it would mean all the world to.
