A fast food takeaway in the heart of Newport that is seldom seen open will be converted into a convenience store.
Planners accepted Mrs M Emmakulata’s change of use application to convert ‘Fry Nation’ at 84 – 85 High Street into ‘Family Shopper’, a retail outlet part of the Tesco group. The store will serve the ‘large residential estate to the west side of Newport’, a submitted Design and Access Statement said.
A Planning Statement included in the application said:
“The proposal is to convert the existing fast-food outlet into a convenience store to serve the surrounding area including the High Street.
“This proposal will increase economic activity for the benefit of the Island. The convenience store will offer a wide range of products as indicated with the diagrammatic plan layout attached to this application.
“This proposal will lead to an increase in retail employment by this new investment into the site and will be to the benefit of the local community.”
Newport High Street already has other convenience stores, including Central and Tesco Express, as well as Poundland.
The council has not yet published a report justifying the decision.
Won’t be too long until the island as a
24hrs a day convenience store.
Bring it on.
Why do we need basically another Tesco Express on Newport High Street? Better to open a KFC.
A Greggs bakers would be much better.
Why would this even be a good idea when they just made a tesco not far in the high street?
What’s wrong with a bit of competition.
I bet Emmakulata’s will be cheaper and open
longer hours, it’s what they do best.
Every little helps
