Around the clock shopping is a thing of the past as Tesco has announced that it will not be reintroducing 24-hour store openings, including at Tesco Extra in Ryde.
Until the pandemic struck, a number of Tesco stores across the country were open 24 hours a day, apart from on a Sunday when stores were only open from 10:00-16:00.
COVID brought about a significant change and the supermarket chain slashed its opening hours, briefly bringing back 24-hour opening in the run-up to Christmas 2020.
However, it has now been confirmed by the shopping giant that 24-hour shopping has gone for good.
Tesco Extra in Ryde will now be open from 06:00 until midnight Monday-Saturday and 10:00-16:00 on Sundays.
It has also been announced this week that overnight stock replenishment in 36 large stores will cease, with daytime self stacking favoured instead. As a result, hundreds of job roles are expected to be lost but it is unclear if Tesco Ryde is affected by this change.
Jason Tarry, Tesco UK and ROI CEO, has said:
“We operate in a highly competitive and fast-paced market and our customers are shopping differently, especially since the start of the pandemic.
“We are always looking at how we can run our business as simply and efficiently as possible, so that we can re-invest in the things that matter most to customers.
“The changes we are announcing today will help us do this. Our priority now is to support our impacted colleagues through these changes and, wherever possible, find them alternative roles within our business.”

Good call, who in there right mind needs 24 hour opening anyway.
6am till midnight is more than sufficient. Maybe they can start to lower some of there prices now.
I have always thought that they were over staffed anyway.
You are joking right? Tesco Ryde over staffed. You don’t know what you’re talking about. Not enough staff to stack shelves, trust me, I know.
Too many Managers stacking shelves on a much higher pay scale!
It has also been announced this week that overnight stock replenishment in 36 large stores will cease
.
So, the staff will be in the way stacking shelves when you are trying to select stuff, as they already are and you will find empty shelves because the items are still out back when you expect them to be on the shelves
this is about ensuring that those in management get the bonuses, shareholders get the dividends and ground floor staff get the sack
Many years ago, and in a more enlightened part of the UK, super market that I used simply cut open the boxes that they then put on the shelves for you, the shopper, to take out what you wanted. Cut down a lot of work (costs) and left the aisles uncluttered. But, of course, in those days pussy cat was unable to read the label on his tin and storm off up the garden.
Where is this utopia you speak of ?
It sounds to me that you are describing Aldi ?
” Doctor doctor, I think I am a super market,” ” how long have you felt this way?” “Ever since I was Lidl”.
I give it 3 months and they will close completely, Aldi and Lidl beat Tesco on prices and quality hands down. Turn it into a nice big hotel then, the car park is already there for it.
Better still another housing development!! Just what Ryde needs according to the developers…. I think not!
It will never happen it is the Islanders meeting place
I am certain most people only go there for a chit chat
Went to the Aldi store in Cowes once – it had cooking sauces one side of the aisle the length of the store. Bit overkill I thought but turned the corner – more cook in sauces! Oh went down another aisle – yet more of them. Ridiculous! Very poor selection of other products that day and the fresh veg was dire. Never been back. So I’m not a bit interested in Aldi coming to Ryde
On quality? Are you serious? Ok Lidl bakery is good but other than that
It’s bad enough early morning with the personnal home shoppers in store. It’ll be a race between them and the in store customers to grab what they can, should there be any products left on the shelves to grab! Just a cost cutting exercise to benefit Tesco, nothing to do with the customer. Hoping Aldi comes to Ryde.
It’s all part of the Cop26 plan for the future to save the climate.
Times are changing. I read Spain will no longer have Bars open past midnight
We will soon be living in a world where we cannot do the things we use to do.
