There are only 24 hours left to view the varied creations on display as part of this year’s 2022 Chillerton and Gatcombe Scarecrow Festival, which has been another great success for the villages.
The festival, which comes to an end tomorrow (Friday), has been running bi-annually since 2010 and is an event that the 2 villages of Chillerton and Gatcombe put on for the enjoyment of Islanders and visitors over the half-term break.
Many of the households make scarecrows (or Gallybaggers as they are called on the Isle of Wight) and display them in and around their gardens. There are about 100, so there is a lot to see.
This year, along with traditional scarecrows, there are ducks, donkeys and deep-sea divers, together with some famous faces such as Rod Stewart, Boris Johnson and Queen Elizabeth II. There is even a chap repairing an old Triumph.
Many of the villagers get involved, even those not displaying scarecrows, by helping to make cakes and serving refreshments in Aunt Sally’s Tea room at the village hall, as well as in the local Gallybagger pub.
This year’s event has been coordinated by the Chillerton and Gatcombe Community Association (CGCA), a charity that runs 2 buildings in Chillerton village, providing entertainment and activities all year round.
There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd award for best Gallybagger this year, to be decided by a people’s vote. All the scarecrows entered into the competition have a number and a voting slip can be filled in at either Aunt Sally’s tearoom or The Gallybagger pub.
