A full entry has been secured for this year’s Sandown Sprint, sponsored by Island Car Centre, which will once again see 100 competitors taking part in high-octane action along Culver Parade. The Isle of Wight’s speed trial is a motor racing event for cars and will be held over the weekend of 20th/21st April 2024.
There are a few changes to the Sprint format event this year; competitor cars will now all be based in a new Race Village at Fort Street, rather than out at Yaverland as in previous years. This will create a spectacle much closer to the town centre and encourage more people to enjoy getting up close to the cars and drivers as they prepare for the start line.
The Race Village will also be extended into Sandham Gardens. The course itself has been slightly extended at the finish and this year all ticket holders will be able to watch the action from both sides of the track. As well as the new Race Village and the main Culver Parade viewing area, access to the Browns enclosure will be open to all ticket holders. Promoter Tim Addison says:
“We aim to start 100 cars in April, so it’s great to have these places full already. We have a reserve list and the last places will be allocated later this month. It’s terrific news for the Island’s motorsport fans.”
“I think we are in for a very exciting weekend. I find it hard to believe what a variety of cars we have entered this time. Ranging from an Austin 7 Special, through 60s and 70s stalwarts such as Austin A40, Ford Anglia, Minis, and Escorts to fire-breathing monsters such as a Pontiac Grand Prix and Vauxhall Firenza Can Am. There are also out-and-out performance vehicles such as the Mitsubishi Evo 9, Fiesta R5 and Subaru WRC. “This Sprint was always intended to encourage motorsport on the Isle of Wight and I am very pleased to see that nearly half the entries are from Islanders.”
