Given just 2 weeks to live as a baby, Mike Wight has defied the odds to become a national bodybuilding champion.
An Isle of Wight man who has battled cancer three times, undergone bone marrow transplants, and faced lifelong health challenges has transformed his life through bodybuilding, winning two transformation competitions in just over a week.
Now 37, Mike Wight was born with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), a rare condition that left him extremely vulnerable to infections. Against all odds, he survived, only to face further medical challenges throughout his life, including graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), multiple skin cancers, and scarring to his eyes that requires ongoing treatment in Southampton.
Determined not to let his health define him, Mike turned to fitness 18 months ago. He began training under the guidance of Isle of Wight fitness trainer Will George at Urban Metro Gym in Smallbrook. At 5ft 1in tall and weighing 47kg, Mike started 14kg overweight and out of shape. Through consistent training, he not only lost the excess weight but rebuilt his strength, confidence, and outlook on life.
Mike’s dedication quickly paid off. On 7th September, he won the disability category at a bodybuilding competition in Worthing. Just a week later, on 14th September, he claimed the transformation category at a contest in Kent, earning back-to-back titles against competitors from across the country. His remarkable progress has drawn admiration from both his peers and trainers alike.

Trainer Will George said:
“This journey is one of the most inspiring transformations I have ever been part of. He has gone from a lifetime of being defined by illness to standing proud on stage as a champion. It shows what’s possible when you refuse to give up.”
Mike Wight added:
“Despite what life throws at you, anything is possible. Don’t give up on your dreams. It’s not about the cards you’ve been dealt, it’s how you play them.”
His story is being shared to inspire others facing lifelong health challenges, showing that it is possible to overcome adversity and achieve goals once thought out of reach.
Mike’s journey continues this weekend when he competes in the Classic Physique competition in Milton Keynes across multiple categories, including 75kg and under, Beginners up to 170cm, Age 35+, and 80kg and under.
