2 elderly French donkeys called Oliver and Quiller have been helped to their hooves by fire crews this morning (Saturday).
The duo got into difficulty after falling over at stables off Limerstone Road, resulting in firefighters from Newport and Freshwater being mobilised to help.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service used specialist animal rescue equipment and worked with the donkey’s owners and a local vet to resolve the situation.
Thankfully, both donkeys were uninjured.
1 appliance and the Animal Rescue Unit from Newport attended, alongside 1 appliance from Freshwater and a tactical advisor.

I’m glad the donkeys are safe lovely animal and well done fire service for helping these poor donkeys
Ah bless, such beautiful animals, full of character. Great work from the fire service.
donkeys are really intelligent …they were probably having a laugh…..lay down and wait to be picked up
so intelligent. you cannot just teach a donkey to do something…you need to teach it why it is doing it, or it won’t do it
I was always under the impression that they are falsed to do things that they don’t want to do, otherwise they would get whipped and starved into submission.
I don’t think they were having a laugh !
Do you teach donkeys in your spare time then ?
Or is it more like lion taming ?
