Heavy fog hindered the rescue of an injured paraglider in the West Wight earlier this afternoon (Sunday).
At around midday the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service was called to an area of remote downland at Compton, between Brook and Freshwater, after a paraglider crashed to the ground.
Island Echo is told that Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was called to the scene due to the nature of the injuries, but soon found itself grounded at Freshwater Golf Course as fog drifted in off the sea.
Coastguard Rescue 175 helicopter was then called in to evacuate the casualty, however, the helicopter crew also suffered difficulties in the adverse weather conditions and returned to Lee on Solent a short while later.
With an aeronautical extrication ruled out, the casualty was placed into the back of a 4×4 before being conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital by land ambulance.
It remains unclear if foggy conditions contributed to the cause of the incident.
