East Cowes Victoria returned to league action but were edged out by a single 1st-half goal on a damp and foggy afternoon at Beatrice Avenue.
With mist hanging low and the pitch heavy underfoot, the Vics looked to respond to Tuesday evening’s Gold Cup semi-final exit to local rivals Newport. Centre forward Jake Scrimshaw – who was substituted in that defeat – was not on the team sheet. Jacob Reynolds was handed the No.9 shirt, while Scrimshaw is said to have left the club.
Portland – sitting 3rd in the table – began on the front foot and forced a series of early corners. The decisive moment came on 17 minutes when a headed clearance fell to visiting captain Josh Williams on the edge of the area, and his right-foot strike rifled beyond George Bridi (0-1).

The goal underlined Portland’s confidence, and they continued to move the ball smartly despite the conditions, probing for openings as the Vics worked to regain a foothold.
On 39 minutes, Williams’ afternoon took a combative turn when his challenge on Harrison Yates earned a yellow card. Raff Boyd-Kerr was also cautioned 6 minutes later as the contest grew increasingly physical.

Manager Alex Smith acted at the interval, introducing Aedan Coode and Toby Snow in search of greater attacking thrust.

Vics emerged with renewed urgency. Coode fired narrowly wide on 53 minutes before the Vics produced their clearest chance of the afternoon on 62 minutes. Connor Kelly broke through and looked poised to level, only to be denied by a brave save from Callum Smalley at close range.
With the fog swirling and tension building, the Vics pressed hard in the final quarter. Coode’s late free kick picked out Elliot Wheeler, whose glancing header skimmed just wide of the far post.

Despite sustained pressure, the equaliser never arrived, and Portland saw out the closing minutes to secure a hard-earned win.

NEWPORT SALVAGE LATE POINT IN WET AND WINDY STALEMATE

Port struck inside the opening minute and rescued a draw late on in a hard-fought contest at Fawley this afternoon.
Following Tuesday’s epic encounter – when Port beat Vics on penalties in the Gold Cup semi final – this was always likely to be a stern test and on another wet afternoon, with a difficult pitch underfoot, flowing football was scarce as both sides often resorted to the long ball.
The match burst into life inside the opening minute. A ball over the top caught the Fawley back line square and although Ji Nash was forced wide, he kept his composure to pull the ball back to Joe Butcher on the edge of the area, who curled a superb effort into the top corner (0-1).
What followed was largely attritional. Free kicks interrupted the rhythm and neither side created clear-cut chances. Fawley were reduced to 10 men temporarily after a sin bin offence just before the break, but it was the hosts who found the equaliser. Newport’s vulnerability from corners resurfaced as an inswinging delivery crept in at the near post beyond Leon Pitman (1-1).

The 2nd half followed a similar pattern, with Newport slightly more assured playing with the strong breeze but struggling to make the final pass count as the rain intensified.
Skipper Macauley Watterson was immense at the back, dominating aerially and limiting the home side’s opportunities as both defences remained on top.
With the clock ticking down, Fawley appeared to have snatched all 3 points on 89 minutes when Newport failed to fully clear a corner. The ball was recycled and driven into the far corner to turn the game on its head (2-1).
However, Port responded in dramatic fashion. As stoppage time approached and tension grew around the ground, Nash demonstrated his quality when the ball dropped to him near the penalty spot. A sharp turn created the space and he fired home to rescue a deserved share of the spoils (2-2).
It was not a classic, but on a sodden surface both sides battled gamely, and Newport will reflect on a point hard earned.
