Yet more unseasonably wet weather across the Isle of Wight has led to 2 flood alerts being issued by the Environment Agency.
In the past 7 or so hours 20mm of rain has been recorded at Knighton, with the water level in the Eastern Yar high and rising. Over the past 2 days alone more than half a month’s rain has fallen locally,
Environment Agency officials say that from midday water levels will become noticeably high at Alverstone, rising near to the top of the river bank. Some minor out of bank flooding may also occur in fields at Langbridge. However, access issues are not expected at Horringford nor impacts at Sandown.
In Gurnard, a flood alert has been issued as 20mm of rain has also been recorded at Cowes. This is said to be a modest amount, but it follows a few days of wet weather.
High tide at Cowes is expected at 12:30 this afternoon with the river expected to continue to rise and remain high for at least 3 hours after high water, before it can drain with the lowering tide. Between 14:00 and 15:30, properties nearest to the river in Marsh Road may experience garden flooding. S
The forecast shows a drier few days ahead so officials say the flood risk will decrease.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms, but official forecasters for Island Echo, IW Met Service, say they won’t be issuing a warning at this time.
