A flood alert has been issued by the Environment Agency warning of the potential for flooding along the River Yar between Whitwell and Bembridge.
Yesterday’s thunderstorm, which led to flash flooding in the East Wight, saw some 33mm of rain recorded at Wroxall in the space of just 1 hour – a significant amount of rain in such a short period of time.
IW Met Service says that a total of 47mm fell in Shanklin yesterday.
With further rain possible today, a flood alert is in place as the River Yar could rise and be near to the top of the river bank at Alverstone.
Property flooding is not currently expected.
The Environment Agency says it will continue to monitor the forecast and will try and keep the river clear of any reported blockages.
