Torrential downpours across the East Wight have led to flash flooding in Sandown, Shanklin and the Arreton Valley, where roads are now underwater resulting in significant travel delays as Islanders head home for the evening.
Avenue Road in Sandown and Sandown Road in Lake have both seen the usual flooding, with reports of 6-inch deep water at other locations in The Bay including North Road and Oaklyn Gardens in Shanklin.
Meanwhile, the main road through Arreton – between Newport and Sandown – is described as a river with traffic backed up to Blackwater and Hale common as motorists try to negotiate with torrent that is flooding out of the field.
Police are on scene.
Traffic is heavy across the East Wight with delays through Lane and Sandown.
This evening flooding comes at a time when a yellow weather warning for heavy rain is in force, as previously reported by Island Echo last night.
However, not all parts of the Isle of Wight have seen such downpours with some heavy rain reported in Cowes and Ryde, but nothing that has led to significant flooding.
UPDATE @ 18:25 – With the rain quickly moving through, flooding has eased. However, there are still some travel delays and Arreton remains waterlogged.
Any further rain is likely to cause more flooding – especially in prone areas.
Bonchurch is another area hit by flash flooding as the band of extremely heavy rain moved across the eastern fringes of the Island from the east.
I think it’s terrible! Something should be done about it.
The councils fault they need to get of there ass and clean the roads with a sweeper like they use to and clean the drains out They have not done this for ages lack of maintenance to the roads as usual
You have to report it to Island roads.
I think we should lock up the clouds and tell the Sun to do it’s job better.
That or have thermonuclear warfare come to the Isle of Wight.
Both should temporarily do the trick I suppose.

Looking at the photos of this report I know idiots tailgate, but this is the next step to total madness…..
Total madness if they can plough their car into the next vehicle whilst practically everyone is going up a hill, with brake lights on, and presumably in a standstill at the time the photo was taken. Bonkers I tell ya!
Our electric all went out for over an hour, all back on now thanks to workers.

Why don’t the lazy council sort the drains out?? Everyone pays enough.
Too hot, too cold. Too wet, too dry. Too busy, too quiet. You island lot won’t ever be happy.
Council needs to clean the drains no maintenance on this island and we have been paying for it
Needs to be reported to Island Roads, they only seem to do anything when they receive complaints
Try some preventative measures like clearing the drains out. I know they get blocked because there’s hardly any road cleaners around anymore.
I disagree in defence of the Council I see road drain cleaners out regularly on my way to work at 0500 /0600 so they don’t hold the traffic up.
Mumble mumble floating bridge, more bad drivers, idiots along later must be something to do with island drivers or mainland imports, government conspiracy, no sentence, crush it something or other.
You just cant please anybody: it’s hot, too hot and were dying, five minutes of rain and were drowning.

The field which runs parallel to the main road should be ploughed in the correct way to avoid this happening so often. The tractor was out there Tuesday ploughing horizontally to the road, so water just comes from the top of the field and causes trouble for the residents.
Would help I’m sure if Island Roads cleared all the drains out that are currently clogged up with leaves and dirt. Some drains around the back streets of Sandown, Melville Street are blocked solid!
There are No ditches around the fields on the main road Arreton hence
The water ran straight off the fields over the road and into peoples houses
And garages the mess the home owners have had to clear up must have been soul destroying,it’s about time the farmers were fined for NOT digging

It does make me laugh that people choose to travel when there is flood alerts and warnings of distruptive weather. Why add to the chaos and just not travel for one day??!! Common sense clearly doesn’t apply for most people.. LOL

Not a stupid comment in the slightest…just an opinion so I’m sure you get over it…lol. I walked to work to avoid the traffic chaos, it took longer but I left earlier in the morning so people are just too set in their ways and are too dumb to adapt. Put your brain into gear before making daft assumptions about someone you don’t know. Lol
