The troubled Cowes Floating Bridge has once again been taken out of service due to a technical issue discovered this afternoon (Saturday).
Council officials say that the chain ferry – which operates between East Cowes and Cowes – will remain out of action until at least mid-morning tomorrow.
It’s said to be due to a minor technical issue.
The all-so-familiar launch service for both foot passengers and cyclists is now in operation.
UPDATE SUNDAY @ 13:00 – The Floating Bridge has returned to service, the Council has confirmed.

They have discovered a technical issue. We already know what that technical issue is, it’s not fit for purpose.
What happened to the maintenance person who we are paying a wage of £35000 a year
to keep this crap running. This means that on an average household 18 of us are paying all
our council tax for his wage. This is theft!!!
Yet another minor technical issue !
There is only the ONE technical issue, it is NOT fit for service and shouldn’t be in service at all.
This just goes on forever. Somebody has messed up badly in the purchase of this vessel. Where is the warranty, what are the conditions. Unbelievable.!
Getting boring now ,wot a pile a Shite.
Thats what they want you to think so they don’t have to explain to you
Please don’t get bored keep plugging away until hopefully 1 day they will listen and justice is done.
The floating joke out of action again. How many days has it actually worked this year?
Floating bridge No.666
Just getting sooooo boring now
Why is this headlines??
Bring back the old chain ferry, it never broke down.
Council… how can you justify the EXPENCE of all this.
Did this mechanical joke of a thing come with any guarantee or warranty like all other expensive items and are you putting in a claim??????
What an outrageous waste of money this is by the Council.
It should be investigated at the highest level.
Of course the situation with the present chain ferry is a complete disgrace, however, Gorob, you are mistaken the previous ferry did break down “six hours after going to service and engineers had to be called from the mainland,” Isle of Wight Mercury 30th January 1976.
its alright council tax up 3% this year will cover it…
After nearly 5 years, our glacial council finally taking some action. Another year of council tax rises to cover the losses. If they get a proper financial settlement!!. Will we be reimbursed?, with a cut in next years bill.
Well well well !!!!!!
Here we go again!!!!!
Somebody just admit it isn’t fit for purpose never has been never will be …..
And as for mediation not worth the effort!!!!
Come on all you councillors you know who you are ADMIT the biggest waste of space that you waste our council tax on….
I wait with anticipation ( not ) ….
Without mediation, the council can’t take subsequent legal action.
It has been a very long time since this heap of junk has cost us mere mortals loads of cash …..
If mediation is the answer why didn’t they instigate this years ago ??????
They know as well as everyone knows it isn’t fit for purpose never was never will be and I think most people are fed up of the council passing the buck …
We know who is responsible why can’t they admit it ( Councillor B ) !!!!!
Must have been ordered by Brian Rix.
Yawn. Please tell us when there’s a new one we might get excited…. I said might
Start a petition and hundred thousand signatures then parliament listen or is that to much to ask for island people
I think that instead of reporting that this disaster is not working, they should report when it is working.
Have a bit of patients, this is a smart bit of kit, everything brand new has some sort of teething problems to start
off with. Once it is bedded in, I am sure it will be tickety boo.
Bob Seely is quiet about this, why doesn’t he weigh in on it. If he is “for the people” then maybe he should start a proper enquiry, but then again ‘ol sausage Bob doesn’t like hard work.
3 former Isle of Wight hovercraft have arrived in Singapore why can’t we send FLOATING BRIDGE there as well
scrap the ..ing turd
What was wrong with the old one? Apart from relinking chains every few years, nothing. Why didn’t they build the new one with the same specs as the old one? Never since this pile of doggy plop got put into service has it ran properly. Why are they wasting their time and money?
