The first round of payments in response to the government’s energy bills rebate scheme has been made to local residents.
The £150 payment has started going out to those eligible to benefit from the scheme designed to help households in council tax bands A to D.
In most cases, the rebate will go directly into bank accounts of those paying council tax by Direct Debit.
Councillor Chris Jarman, Cabinet member for strategic finances, said:
“Payments will be made in batches each week until all Direct Debit cases have been paid — therefore, please do not worry if you have not received your payment straight away.
“The council will shortly be writing to those who do not pay by Direct Debit with further information about how to claim a rebate.
“The letter will contain an online code to complete our application form and provide us with your bank details. Once we have received this, we aim to process your application as quickly as possible.
“Please do not contact us to find out when you will receive your payment as this will mean the payments take longer to be sent out.”
You are eligible to claim this payment if your property is in Band A – D and:
- you were living at the address on 1st April 2022;
- the council tax bill was in your name on 1st April 2022;
- the rebate has not already been claimed by another household member;
- the property is not a second home or unoccupied.

Further details of the discretionary scheme for those not eligible for the mandatory scheme will be issued in due course.
wouldn’t it be easier to pop a cheque in with the letter? Also what about people who do not go online how do they get the rebate.
That’s the big problem, people who don’t have a smart phone or Internet access are totally irrelevant and unthought of in today’s society. It is just discrimination. Same as those of us who want to pay for things in cash.
Nothing to do with that don’t forget it’s direct debit which is more or less instant
what a waste of paper? You shouldn’t have to go online to get the rebate says it will be done automatically!
no way will they get my bank details over phone send me a cheque as thats how i pay my council tax i have been told by bank and police not to give any details out over the phone
Does it say over the phone?
Can’t we pay £150 less one month?
saves all this transferring and passing out our bank details which we are not confident will be kept secure.
they are doing this in Scotland from BBC news “In Scotland councils have been told they can give the £150 as a direct discount off their council tax – and many have done that.”
Just drag it out as long as possible so you sit on the money longer and make it as difficult as possible to gain the rebate hoping some won’t bother at all so they end up with a bit more in their bank account.Like the person said before me,just take it off the yearly bill…simples.
Exactly. Just another example of how utterly inept the IWC is.
We’ve had all the Bee Ess of ‘needing software updates’ etc etc, but if that was true then why wait to get the letters out to those who need to apply? Those payments won’t be ddebit will they? Just more lame excuses from people paid good money to do nothing.
Damn quick at taking our money damn slow at giving it back what gives, direct debit is almost instant and if they have your details what’s the problem.
Earning interest on our money ??????
Cheers thank you so much ….
Really takes the biscuit as per usual ……
Make it awkward, and people will not know how to, or forget to claim, as for the elderly struggling to cope with this new world? The council as we all know, and as I know from personal experience, has a policy of being as arrogant and obstructive as possible if your an ordinary little person.
But if you want to build, build, build, they’re only too damn happy to be your faithful servant!
If they haven’t given me the discount after nine payments, they won’t be getting the tenth. If they want to go to court I will argue that they owe me, not the other way around.
