The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is responding to reports of a fire at Jewson Moreys in Newport this morning (Thursday).
4 appliances and an aerial ladder platform have been mobilised to the scene on Trafalgar Road having been alerted to the developing situation at around 09:30.
Island Echo is told by fire control that a fire has been reported in the extraction building on site.
Witnesses at the scene say smoke is coming from the ‘mill’.
2 pumps from Newport and an aerial ladder platform from Newport are on scene, with a further pump from East Cowes and a fourth from Ryde currently en-route to the scene. The Incident Command Unit is also in attendance.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service is on scene, but no one has been injured.
UPDATE – The fire has been extinguished and resources are now standing down from the incident.
It has been confirmed that the small fire broke out in the on-site bailer unit and extraction ducting.
4 breathing apparatus and 2 hose reels have been used to bring the situation under control, with positive pressure ventilation utilised to rid the building of smoke.
Jewsons will re-open to the public at 12:30 today.
