A fire has been discovered at St Mary’s Hospital’s Sevenacres Mental Health Unit this evening (Wednesday), prompting a large scale response from the fire service.
Several fire appliances, including the Aerial Ladder Platform from Newport, have responded to the scene of the incident on the hospital site off Dodnor Lane.
It’s understood that the fire has broke out on one of the wards, leading to an evacuation of the building.
It appears the fire has now been extinguished and a number of resources from Ryde, East Cowes and Shanklin are being stood down, with the incident being swiftly scaled back by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
UPDATE @ 18:43 – It has been confirmed that the fire broke out in an en-suite bathroom in one of the patient’s rooms.
Staff at the secure unit worked quickly to extinguish the fire, with firefighters helping to clear smoke from the building.

virtually impossible for a fire to break out in a bathroom – so, which resident was able to set fire to the place.
Crafty fag in the loo went wrong.
