Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has been called to reports of smoke issuing from underground in Newport this evening (Monday).
2 appliances are in attendance on Fairlee Road outside Medina College, were sparks and smoke have been seen coming from the ground next to the base of an electricity pole.
The alarm was raised by a passing member of the public at 17:00.
Investigations are underway to ascertain the cause and to bring the incident to a safe conclusion.
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks have been alerted.
UPDATE – Fire crews have stood down from the incident, which has now been passed to engineers from SSEN.
