Just months after local drivers quit over pay concerns and parcels reportedly piled up undelivered, courier firm Evri has announced the creation of ‘hundreds’ of new self-employed roles across the Isle of Wight.
Back in May, Island Echo reported significant delivery issues across the Island, with local sources alleging that some drivers had walked away from their rounds due to low pay, resulting in widespread delays and uncollected parcels at the Newport depot.
Residents in several towns and villages were left frustrated, with many experiencing days – and in some cases weeks – without deliveries.
Now, Evri says it is expanding its self-employed courier network across the Isle of Wight as part of a nationwide recruitment drive.
New roles offer flexible working between 08:00 and 20:00, with an average hourly earning rate of £20.86, according to the company. The jobs are a mix of flexible and permanent opportunities, with the possibility of continuing through peak periods such as Christmas.
Evri has also relaunched its ‘Evri Plus’ initiative which provides eligible self-employed couriers with access to 28 days paid holiday, pension contributions, and the national minimum wage guarantee. Additional benefits include parental leave and access to a Digital GP, physiotherapy, and retailer discounts.
Martijn de Lange, CEO at Evri, has said:
“We continue to deliver phenomenal growth at Evri, and none more so than within our hard-working courier network, who are truly the backbone of our business.
“We know that service, reliability and quality are critical factors for our clients and consumers, and so by expanding our self-employed network further across the Isle of Wight, we remain focused in delivering on each of those areas.”
The company is also encouraging drivers to go electric, offering up to £3,300 over 2 years as part of its ‘Go Electric’ scheme to support the transition to more environmentally friendly delivery vehicles.

I don’t know who is worse, Royal Snail or Evri!
What is becoming of Great Britain, we once ruled the
waves, thesedays we can’t even run a decent delivery
service.
I have to say Evri (here on the island especially) is abysmal, with many parcels going missing or being delivered weeks after the due date. So much so that I’ve started to ask suppliers who they use, and if they mutter that word “Evri” then I take my business elsewhere. I use Amazon “A LOT” and never had an issue with Royal Mail (the same with Ebay) and DPD are excellent too. This is for Parcels mind you (which is now the priority for RM) whereas letters (understandably) often take much longer to arrive. I’m sure the time will come where they simply do parcels and the letters side of things will be farmed out somehow.
Owner operator these hard working people are one breakdown from going under .Receiving pence per delivery. Or on the books put under far too much stress while great for top of the ladder. Then you picking holes in something you know nothing about yes enough is enough do one nasty little thing!!
Ps enough l helped run out the anpr system that helps keep us safe what that make me.l was paid handsomely talking to the drivers here not paid “enough” so there lies the problem top to greedy does not filter down you are not nice in being so perfect!!
I think Royal Mail are concentrating on the parcels as competition to the other delivery companies, in order to win back customers. (Some of my TRACKED 48 are arriving next day.). Then they’ll have the monopoly again. Evri need a drop off / pick up station somewhere on the island….some of mine are taking two weeks to get here!
Their ‘service’ has been truly appalling for months. As the end user I had no influence, but maybe my resorting to complaining to the supplier using them will have had some effect.
Alan was a great member of their team.
I can only imagine he had enough and left,
the service is now sh*t.
At least than 40p for a very small pkt delivered ,that will take some earning!!that’s why all the earlier ones quit!Evri were taking the pee,and the workforce went to carriers who pay a “living wage”!.
Our NEvri courier refuses to deliver to us he dumps the parcel 1 mile away from our front door, the parcels often get stolen, but there isn’t anything that we can do about it. Blank photos of every delivery, a proper delivery company with proper couriers wouldn’t allow it. I wish NEvri didn’t exist.
£20.86per hour?? Having a laugh right, it actually averages out about £8 per hour. Not to mention not getting reimbursed for fuel or scanning the parcels in and loading up the van, which takes an hour or more if you’re not on a regular route. No wonder such a high turnover of staff. Just remember guys if something is delivered by NEvri, it’s not the courier at fault for it being late but those low star reviews will reduce their pay as if they don’t maintain 4.8 stars they don’t get a bonus for good service and the reviews are for just the courier not NEvri themselves.
The Evri driver in West Wight is top notch can’t fault him or the service he gives…very rarely is a package a day late…the Royal Mail however, odd how I get nothing for a few days then lot’s all at once…this is most weeks.
We have had a fantastic Evri, nee Hermes, courier, Tom. He goes above and beyond to get out parcels delivered. Evri also need to get drop-off shops organised as I recently had a prepaid returns parcel for Evri but nowhere to accept it. In response to Enoch is Enough ( older readers will u derstand) our Royal Mail delivery man, Mark, is also excellent. It seems that only some customers have problems, maybe it’s themselves to blame? I wouldn’t wish to do these jobs, but some people do and do it well..
Why don’t EVRI have drop off / collection areas on the Island. If you want to return goods then the nearest place is the mainland, so you have to pay EVRI to send it back. DPD have one.
Myles, who delivers to East Cowes, is brilliant. Friendly and efficient and always delivers within the allotted time period. Maybe I am lucky but have never had any issues.
We have markus little silver van hes brilliant but he left is back for now but not sure for how long ..evri took the piss paying fuck all ..
If I place an order and find that evri is the courier I immedaitely cancel the order, they cannot be relied upon.
