EMERGENCY BEACON SPARKS SEA AND AIR SEARCH OFF OSBORNE

Cowes RNLI and Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 175 were involved in a midnight search following the activation of a distress beacon last night (Thursday).

At around 22:25, Solent Coastguard picked up an emergency distress beacon signal in the vicinity of Osborne Bay, East Cowes. A Mayday alert was relayed in the Solent area.

At just before 23:00 the assistance of Cowes RNLI was requested, resulting in the Atlantic 85 lifeboat hitting the water for a second time. The volunteer crew made their way out of Cowes Harbour and around to Osborne Bay before conducting a sweep along the coastline to Ryde.

The lifeboat was soon joined by Coastguard Rescue 175 from Lee-on-Solent. The helicopter searched west towards Newtown before making an about turn and heading to the East Cowes area.

With one day rolling into the next, the search continued. However, with nothing found the decision was taken to stand down the search and rescue assets at 00:21.
