A former telecoms engineer who was stopped in his van whilst parked outside Hogs Head in Newport has been found guilty of drink driving.
Alexander Pugsley, 27, of Belmont Park Avenue in Maidenhead, pleaded guilty to drink driving when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, told the court that at around 02:25 on 26th February, Police were called to the Hogs Head pub in Newport where a man was being detained having been seen driving his Mercedes Van whilst suspected of being under the influence.
Officers arrived at the scene and noticed Pugsley’s speech to be slurred and his eyes watery. A roadside breath test was conducted which returned a positive result – it was here that Pugsley admitted to officers that he didn’t intend to drive the van and instead wanted to get his cigarettes from the vehicle.
The 27-year-old was taken to Newport Police Station where a further 2 tests were conducted, the lowest of which returned a reading of 79. The legal limit is 35.
In interview at the station, Pugsley admitted that he had been drinking in Ryde and had drove to Newport, whilst drunk, to get some food.
Pugsley, who had worked as a telecoms engineer until he lost his job as a result of this incident, was a man of previous good character.
Defending, Oscar Vincent said that there was no evidence of any bad driving before he was stopped. He also added that Pugsley cooperated fully with the Police.
Alexander Puglsey was handed a 20-month driving disqualification. He was also ordered to pay a fine of £120, costs of £85 and a £48 surcharge fee.

What are these defense solicitors on “ no evidence of any bad driving before he was stopped” should`nt have been driving period incident or no incident
When I asked a local in Newport ‘Where is the “Hogs Head”, he rudely informed me, ‘Three foot from the Hogs arse’
A debase fellow indeed.
brilliant, we need more humour
Another mainlander, coming over here to break our laws. It shouldn’t be allowed.
It wasn’t allowed, that’s why he was arrested, just as he would have been if he was an islander.
Do your bigoted, racist views extend to islanders on the mainland as well? What about sexuality, race, religion or ethnicity?
you truly are a muppet
The comments section on here is a cesspool of absolute muppetry. We’re all guilty.
Oh no we’re not, John S. You’re falling for the common error on here of blanket blaming everyone for the misdeeds of a percentage. A very high percentage on this site I grant you, but pray don’t tar us all with that sticky brush.
