A Sandown pensioner has been disqualified from driving after being filmed drinking beer behind the wheel.
Andrew Downer, of Medeway in Sandown admitted a single charge of drink driving when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (Tuesday).
Crown Prosecutor, Roxanne Coles, told the court that on the morning of the 17th January, Police received a report of a man seen drinking cans of Budweiser whilst sat behind the wheel of his car on Wilkes Road in Sandown.
Videos capturing the man driving off after finishing the last dregs in the can, were sent to Police who located the Kia near Downer’s home address.
The 69-year-old was approached by Police, admitting that he had driven whilst under the influence of alcohol earlier that morning.
A roadside breath test returned a reading of 45 – just above the legal limit of 35.
Downer was taken to Newport Police Station where he admitted purchasing 2 bottles of Budweiser after visiting the laundrette. It was here that he admitted his actions were ‘stupid’ and that he didn’t think the 2 bottles would put him ‘over the limit’.
The court heard how Downer was convicted of a similar offence back in 2001.
Defending the pensioner, Jim Osborne, told the court that his client was deeply remorseful and that was open and honest with Police about his offending behaviour.
Magistrates handed Downer a 12-month driving ban and fined him £120. He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £48 surcharge fee.
