A 14-year-old boy and a 58-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of possessing an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose, following an incident that saw Police and Royal Navy bomb disposal experts rush to Gurnard last night (Monday).
As previously reported by Island Echo, at around 19:44, Police carried out a search of an address within Gurnard Pines, on Cockleton Lane in Gurnard, as part of an investigation into a report of malicious communications of a sexual nature.
During this search a number of suspicious objects were located and an evacuation of properties within 100 metres was undertaken for 4 hours to ensure the safety of residents while the objects were examined by specialist officers from the Royal Navy.
Thankfully, following this examination, it was established that no explosive materials were present.
A 14-year-old boy from Cowes was arrested on suspicion of sending communications of an indecent or offensive nature. In addition, he and a 58-year-old man were both arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon in a private place, and possessing an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose.
Both remain in custody at this time.
Officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team remain in the area today and anyone with any concerns is encouraged to speak to them.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said they are exploring any links between this latest incident and a similar incident back on 11th March.

The key is in the word “suspicion” they were arrested on suspicion of explosive substances, but during investigation none were found.
