2 people are being cared for after attempting to rescue a dog from the sea at Shanklin, with a tragic outcome.
HM Coastguard are currently on scene at Shanklin Esplanade where 2 people have been assisted to shore by Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat.
Sadly, the dog that they were attempting to rescue has died in the incident.
Eyewitnesses say the dog entered the water and drifted some distance. Once closer to the shore, 2 individuals – an older man and woman – entered the icy waters in a bid to rescue the animal.
Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team are on scene and are now caring for the man and woman.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has been requested to attend.
Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat (SSILB) remain on scene, standing off from the shore.
UPDATE @ 13:52 – A senior paramedic and an ambulance crew are now in attendance and checking over a female. However, the male, who entered the water as a Good Samaritan, has been cleared and is making his own way home.
SSILB has now stood down from the incident and is returning to station.
UPDATE @ 14:02 – All parties involved have been given the all clear by paramedics.
The incident, which began at around 13:00, is now being stood down.
The dog – believed to be a Spaniel – has been collected by the family.

How brave of the couple and how nice we still have decent people here. I hope life is very kind to them both.
Bless the owners but sad news for their baby who died. An animal has feelings too and I hope he/she is at peace x
