Bembridge RNLI’s inshore lifeboat launched to investigate a distress alert from a yacht off Bembridge this afternoon (Friday).
RNLB Norman Harvey was launched at around 14:35 at the request of Solent Coastguard to investigate a DSC Distress alert that had been received, but without any follow-up voice message.
It was thought that the alert had come from a yacht around 2 miles North East of the lifeboat station at Lane End.
The volunteer lifeboat crew checked with a boat in the vicinity of the location given and confirmed that they were not in any difficulty.
The ‘Norman Harvey’ was stood down when the Chichester Harbour Master located the potential casualty vessel – a yacht which had made the alert in error.
The lifeboat returned to Lane End and was recovered by 15:00.
