An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic individual to join the Isle of Wight’s leading news website as a Digital News Reporter.
We are looking for someone to become a crucial part of our small team in Ryde, keeping the Island informed and on the move around the clock following our ‘first, fast, free’ ethos.
Island Echo is known for delivering hard-hitting headlines, shock exclusives and story-telling photos, so a key part of this role is covering breaking news as it happens. This involves reporting on and photographing a range of sometimes sensitive news stories including road traffic collisions, crime scenes, fires and rescues.
As a Digital News Reporter, you will also cover court proceedings, politics, community news and events. It can be a very interesting, varied and rewarding role, championing local businesses and communities.
The role is based on 36 hours a week across 4 days, including a 30-minute paid lunch break. The working day is 10:00-19:00, although there is some element of flexibility for the right candidate. There is an on-call rota requirement of 1 in every 3 weekends, working remotely from home.
A full UK driving licence and own vehicle (car or motorcycle) are a must. Mileage will be compensated.
You do not have to hold a formal qualification (such as NCTJ) to apply for this position – we are welcoming applications from all with a passion to learn, including those about to leave school or university. On the job training will be provided.
Key Responsibilities:
- Produce engaging stories with accuracy and speed
• Use a variety of multimedia tools to report news from across the Isle of Wight, including live streaming to Facebook, interviewing and taking photos/videos
• Curate storytelling articles from a variety of sources, including writing up press releases, as well as pitching your own original ideas to the editor
