Passengers aboard Wightlink’s St Faith car ferry are currently unable to disembark in Portsmouth following a mechanical failure of the port’s linkspan.
Island Echo readers have reported that the news of delays has been given to passengers aboard other Wightlink ferries operating on the route, with those at sea unable to dock at Portsmouth due to St Faith being stuck in position.
Wightlink has told passengers that engineers have been sent to fetch a spare part for the equipment.
It’s currently unknown how long it will take to replace the faulty part and unload the passengers currently aboard, or the knock-on affect on the service.
UPDATE @ 16:09 – Wightlink is advising passengers of delays of up to 60 minutes as engineers work to rectify the fault.
Meanwhile, St Clare is currently holding off from the Portsmouth terminal on ‘the hulk’ – Wightlink’s Portsmouth Harbour floating mooring platform.

i had this happen on a Calmac ferry and they simply pulled off the berth and turned round, we all then just reversed off the ferry.
As it is the port ramp and not the ferry ramp I don’t think your suggestion is much use.
Linkspan ramp and not the ferry!. Ironic tho as weekend just gone the ramp was serviced as ferries were going from the international port.
Not so much, my ferry again was cancelled on the 19th October at 5.17 pm only to get a text From Wightlink to inform us that my booking at 7pm has now been cancelled owing to a technicle fault on the loading ramp ( WHAT AGAIN) and my ferry will now depart 2 hours later at 9pm .but this never showed up till 9,37 pm , we departed at 9.47 pm ,we left the hospitol at 3pm at Queen Alexanra so it was a very long day for us
So much for a preventative maintenance programme over the last weekend.
Would you believe I have just had an email from Wightlink asking me to fill in a survey about my thoughts on their services on the Wightlink facilities in Portsmouth harbour ..UNBELIEVABLE !!!
they are havin a laugh
Wasn’t the ramp serviced over the weekend? Did someoen screw up ?
This is the Portsmouth Wightlink Gunwharf Linkspan which I understand was under its annual maintenance over all of the last weekend on Saturday and Sunday when all sailings were having to be undertaken from further up the harbour from the Portsmouth International Port.
We were on the Sunday 19.00hrs sailing from that port which was delayed and no information was given to us while we waited on the quayside. Many people were out of their cars and suitably unhappy with the situation.
A bit worrying if it has failed already within a couple of days from maintenance.
wouldnt need failing ferries with one fixed link
Pah, just swonk it with a gert hammer. Sorted.
I am a islander and have reservations about a fixed link BUT I AM HAVING SECOND THOUGHTS
i think you are not alone it just needs someone like Carl Feeney to start the bull rolling
