Motorists heading in and out of East Cowes face delays today (Wednesday) as temporary traffic lights have been set up to allow repairs to yet another burst water main.
Last night water started gushing down the main road in and out of the town near to the junction with Folly Lane.
Southern Water – who are already dealing with a major leak in Nettlestone – were alerted to the situation and engineers were deployed.
Now, 2-way temporary traffic lights have been erected as repairs get underway.
Some locals are without water supply this morning.

What was the point in a hose pipe ban this is the 3rd water main that has burst now
Chris, they need the hose ban so as to provide water for the leaks. Next they will be charging us for washing the roads where the leaks are. All part of the master plan.
It’s OK The investors will get a good dividend.
Better to give money to them than invest in water infrastructure and keeping sewage out of the sea.
They are referring to them as ‘burst’ – is it possible they are collapsing due to the low pressure with the water shortage and their general age and poor condition?
Water pressure wouldn’t be enough to support them, but poor condition and exteme age are certainly potential failures. Has anybody ever thought of bringing essential utilities under national control? Oh, wait…
How much investment do you think they would get under national control?
How much do you think it would cost to purchase all the water companies? Have you seen the price of their shares?
Most likely due to the hot weather and shrinkage of the subsoil they are buried in. You will notice that a lot of roads have also seen substantial movement during this prolonged hot spell.
Southern Water are a joke. The engineers are hard working but there are not enough of them
The directors are the problem , two received £800,000 bonuses last year for running a shambolic company. They should lose their jobs.
They need to employ more workers and pay them more
They were fined £90million for various offences too. £90million would fund a lot of engineers.
Should be nationalised.
Totally agree about the nationalisation. I would go further and say ALL essential services should be nationalised (including our ferries). This will never happen as all the fat cat shareholders, which no doubt includes a lot of M.P.s, would be screaming.
Had to pop over to Cowes this morning and going out and coming back no workers there whatsoever but still traffic lights. Where the bloody hell are they. Like I said in another post that in New Zealand any roadworks when started have to work day and night until finished. Should be law here.
If the situation is the same as the one down on the corner of York Avenue/ Adelaide a few weeks back I was reliably informed that once the road is dug up they have to leave it before making road good for 48 hours to allow the “gases” to subside. The gases are caused by pressure from above on compacting of earth, which could make sense if you jump 1 million years hence to where the fracking idea came from.
If Nettlestone residents were collecting dirty water in wheelie bins and wheelbarrows yesterday, I’d imagine everyone else in East Cowes are filling up their baths for an evening soak!
Been past here 4 times today and guess what no one working there what a surprise. Traffic built up to near Osborne House tonight. Water in this area is cloudy and does not look good.
Came through earlier, took ages. Expect floating bridge will break down in sympathy.
It amuses me ,the water people say there is no water,so how did the water main break ,someone or some people need to answer a few questions,if they can’t answer them sack them , southern water are a joke !!!
Another reason why Southern Water need to really really start investing in replacement of old pipes and doing some major work when Island Roads dig up roads instead of doing it after they have made good. The reservoirs are nearly non existent or been sold off by Council on the Island making us nearly totally dependent on mainland supply which at present tastes absolutely foul. How many times have roads been dug up for total repair and then a pipe bursts. If it was their money they may be a bit more pro-active. Share-holders obviously laughing all the way to the bank.
No respite when this finishes. More, roads don’t work delays starting here next Monday.
I’m glad my hose pipe ban has helped to save the river levels , absolutely useless company.
